It is nearly impossible to see your situation clearly when you’re emotionally struggling. That’s where a therapist can help! I like to compare therapy to untangling a ball of yarn. Together we can find a way to organize your thoughts and figure out how to accomplish your goals. In my therapy sessions, I offer a space to explore your thoughts and the purpose behind your actions.

I am currently taking new patients who are experiencing problems with work, school and/or relationships that are due to obsessive and problematic usage of Internet/video games/smartphones and other electronic screens. Depression and anxiety are often associated with excessive use of these interactive technologies. Over the past 15 years, I have seen a significant rise in my practice in people who have experienced major difficulties that have been rooted in spending too much time online, or excessively involved in one or more forms of interactive technology. You're trying your hardest to feel connected to your loved one(s) but instead you end up feeling the opposite. You're tired of overthinking and missing the mark. You might be experiencing the "what ifs" as I call them: "What if my partner is unable to meet my needs? Maybe they don't care to...What if breaking up is the best thing? Do they even love me?" I want you to wake up excited to spend the day with your partner...and actually enjoy the day together! Without any casual conversations turned fights, without avoiding intimacy, without constantly triggering one another. Healthy communication not only exists, it's within your reach.

Welcome to my practice! I aim to help my patients lead lives that are fulfilled and meaningful. I do so by collaboratively working to understand the internal restrictions that may be keeping them from taking full possession of their lives, relieving painful symptoms in the process. I have repeatedly seen that psychotherapy can nourish experiences of presence and vitality, deepen satisfaction in one’s relationships, and generate energy for creative, professional, and leisurely pursuits. If you seek self-understanding and relief from psychic suffering, I may be the therapist for you. I look forward to meeting you.

Everything that happens to you happens to your body. Stress is often the result of a body/mind split, that we usually ignore. Most of my clients have engaged previously in talk therapy and are now ready to go deeper into their process. Those clients are intelligent, creative, successful professionals who secretly struggle with low self-esteem, relationship problems, anxiety/depression, and psychosomatic problems. Somatic psychotherapy can help to integrate and support your relationship with yourself so that you can create better relationships with others.

My approach to treatment is to create an empathic, supportive space in which you can examine your life, explore your goals, and either move in directions that you may not have imagined or develop ways which bring comfort, humor, creativity and authenticity to your current experiences. Each person is different and has lived, without necessarily choosing, their own history. I believe it’s crucial to understand and respect the behaviors that have helped anyone to survive and I use techniques which create a treatment partnership based on a mutual understanding of what creates for you safety, wholeness, and growth.

Additionally, I work with individuals who are struggling with: stress, anxiety, life transitions, grief &loss, depression, relationship issues, LGBTQ-related issues, & with artists struggling with performance anxiety.
As humans, we never stop confronting the adversities of life. Although we cannot control the ups of downs of everyday life, we can learn how to respond to and manage stress and tragedy differently than how we have done so throughout our lives in order to survive or tolerate the unbearable. Having a safe and supportive place to address past learned behaviors and coping strategies is crucial for self-healing and growth. As a nonjudgmental and empathetic therapist, I work with clients' strengths which often leaves clients feeling more empowered and with a new sense of self.

Depression Therapists
What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.
What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.
What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.
Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.
How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
