I take a positive optimistic approach while partnering with my patients, providing individual, family & marriage counseling & motivational life coaching, in person, on the phone and on the internet. We'll discuss relationships (typically key to achieving most personal & professional desires), feeling depressed, professional choices, stress, self image, self confidence, pain management, counterproductive habits. I work with couples who want to work on aspects of their relationships, are considering marriage and those considering separation. We'll work together to figure out where you are, where you want to be & how you can get there. My strength is in connecting with people.

"Our work-together can open doors". With my empathy, wisdom and knowledge, I can aspire and inspire change in you who are eagerly seeking and waiting. As a Psychotherapist, I am, first of all, an ally who provide support and a safe space to be. Then we go on a journey together: from an unawareness of the self, from superficial goals and aims towards an understanding of your individuality and to a state of centeredness-unified, integrated self.

Our practice is based on the concept of therapy having the potential to be more effective when it utilizes physical and meditative interventions that research has found to help counteract negative moods. For example, exercise has been found to be as effective in relieving depression as anti-depressant medication itself. I am a licensed psychotherapist, having earned my MSW from Columbia University and MS in Ed from the the University of Pennsylvania, as well a licensed personal trainer, having earned my certification from the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

I believe that whatever most troubles you, it cannot define you psychologically, nor does it lessen the whole of your identity. Therefore, I regard all aspects of your past, your present and your inner life as a series of promising pathways. Through them we can seek a fuller understanding of your living reality, and we can discover and develop key resources for resolving your dilemmas. Throughout our work together my overall perspective on you, the client, is of your distinct, unique connection to the common ground of our human experience: that shared territory in which we all sometimes struggle, and in which I fully include myself.

People seek therapy when they are feeling overwhelmed and when their usual coping skills aren't working. Maybe you're feeling stuck in your work life or relationships, or struggling to find a sense of well being. These difficulties can lead to symptoms of depression, anxiety and addictions, to name a few. I envision therapy as a space where two people can focus together on whatever is causing you pain. I believe this process can lead to greater self-awareness, effectiveness, and personal freedom, as your choices become more conscious and your sense of self deepens.

With over 20 years of experience, including supervisory experience, I am very successful at assisting my clients gain new awareness and understand life-shaping factors especially cultural struggles within the family.
You aim for success and often achieve it! But somehow an empty feeling sometimes arises and the healthier, inner, emotional life you value feels just out of reach. Perhaps at times the relationships you hold dear are affected in ways you don't intend. Some things seem out of alignment for you despite the many things you do right, you're uncertain how to attain the inner well-being you crave and believe in. Perhaps a sense of purposelessness haunts you or you yearn for greater self-understanding, or the ability to feel more at ease within yourself. Give yourself the opportunity to be more fully heard on your thoughts and concerns.

The stress of trying to manage it all when it feels like you're drowning is exhausting! I specialize in working with women feeling overwhelmed by relationship issues, parenting challenges, loss and grief, or traumatic experiences. My clients often struggle with feeling depleted; they're tired, their thoughts keep racing, the anxiety's overwhelming, and they can feel really stuck and alone with their pain. It's a lot! And when life stressors occur it's ok to not feel ok, it's human. Some who are used to doing things on their own may question why healing would be any different and so continue to suffer. You don't need to go it alone.

Whether the collapse is "out there" or "in here," it often seems the world is collapsing. Many of us seek therapy because the sense of losing our mind, our self, our loved ones, or our livelihood is terrifying, and the real threats of catastrophe are debilitating. Knowing what we want becomes increasingly difficult, and we struggle to take shape and hold on to ourselves in the presence of others. We fold up or fold in to protect ourselves and our relationships, but then aloneness, desperation, panic, and self attack set in.

I am a trauma therapist working primarily from an AEDP model, with training in EMDR, Meaning-Centered Psychotherapy and IFS, and have 18 years of experience working with people dealing with substantial losses (whether due to accident, overdose, natural causes or illness), complex family dynamics and health-related stress.
Grief, loss, illness and caregiving can change the ways we feel about ourselves, our lives and our future. The impacts can be immense, and intersect with everything else we've been through in our lives. Many people find that working with a specialized therapist offers an additional level of support when it's difficult to cope. Whether you or someone close to you were recently diagnosed or living with an illness for years, caring for someone else, work in healthcare or whether you lost someone or something important to you, please reach out.

Which primary experience in life usually has the most impact on us? Relationships. If you uncover the source of most problems in living, childhood relationships and the resulting psychological fallout are at the root. Recognizing you are struggling with something is the beginning step in a courageous journey towards changing it. Without judgment, I will support you on that journey as you learn to understand the origins of your problems, and how to make changes for greater life satisfaction. I encourage you to respect, rather than fear, your problems as a signal to seek help. We will work together towards your goals.

I am the founder of Vital Steps Mental Health Counseling Services PC, a private practice operating in NYC. I am a warm, caring, compassionate, and supportive person. Those qualities have made it easy for people to share their deepest emotional issues as they search for a path to cope and manage some of life's most challenging circumstances. Society tends to see and be accepting of the impact of physical challenges on the life of an individual however, most people struggle to understand the debilitating impact of traumatic experience on the health and wellbeing of a person. I get it. I am ready to work with you.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
