Therapy that doesn't suck? You're not broken and you don't need to be fixed. Sure, finding a therapist is hard, but someone who appreciates that is just the beginning. I'm a Columbia-trained, holistic and non-diagnostic therapist and I work well with those who are suspicious of therapist, prefer to avoid medication, or want to avoid a cookie-cutter approach. I don't start with labeling or plugging you into a preexisting program. I won't put you in a diagnostic box or sit passively while you do all the work.

I believe people come to therapy because something isn't working for them. They need someone to listen to their story, hear the deeper meanings and make meaningful connections for them. They may be depressed over a relationship, experiencing a loss of self esteem, mourning a loved, seeking a deeper meaning in life, or becoming aware of a past trauma. Sharing ones concerns with an experienced therapist can help connect past history to the present allowing one to gain meaningful insights into ones life. Therapy is a place to share, unburden and grow toward the fulfillment one longs for.

My philosophy of therapy is collaborative and holistic, and I aim to meet my clients where they’re at to inspire change. As a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, my expertise is in relationships and seeing things through a systemic lens. I have experience working with folks (individuals, couples, or families) with anxiety or depression that can interrupt their ability to live a full life, sometimes facing unsteady relationships and hoping for more security. Together, we can work to make sense of difficult relationships, own and advocate for your feelings and needs in relationships, and identify and set boundaries with others.

I have been in practice for over 25 years and find my work very rewarding. I believe that therapy can help people feel more confident about their place in the world--more confident that the balance of goodness within themselves will allow them to go forward with their lives. I feel respect and gratitude towards my patients; their readiness to explore their areas of vulnerability has helped me to understand similar vulnerabilities within myself. I have learned from many sources; in this sense my approach is eclectic. It is important to tailor frequency and duration of treatment for each patient.

The cornerstone of my practice is the conviction that, despite the fact that each person's life experiences are unique and distinct in their own right, we all have the need to be acknowledged, encouraged, and accepted for who we truly are. My aim as a therapist is to assist you in learning more about who you are and supporting you in overcoming the obstacles to self-acceptance. As a black queer woman who navigates life and engages with my clients through genuine curiosity and profound empathy, I wholeheartedly embrace the beautiful tapestry of intersectionality that defines our individuality.

Often in life we are faced with the unknown; the relationships, situations and experiences that may be or can feel outside of our control. With this uncertainty, fear often follows close behind. Everything can begin to feel a bit out of place. We temporarily lose our way. We do live in uncertain times which has greatly increased stressors and fears. However, what is also true is that we have this beautiful ability to adapt and continue to connect to joy. Connection is key. In our journey together, we will learn to embrace the uncertainty in life through a better understanding of you, leading to genuine healing.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
