When it comes to sex and relationship problems, many of us lead lives of quiet desperation. Sometimes you can be lying in bed next to someone and feel a million miles apart. I am a licensed psychotherapist, specializing in couple therapy and sex therapy. I am the New York Times best-selling author of "She Comes First," and I regularly contribute to major publications such as The Atlantic, The Economist and CNN Health amongst others. Talking about sex and relationships is hard, but self-silencing is even harder. My approach is solutions-oriented, with an emphasis on honest communication, and I give homework in between sessions.

I specialize in treating anxiety, depression, life transitions, and low self-esteem. I work with an integrative approach and base my practice techniques on the unique needs of the individual, as psychotherapy is not based on a "one size fits all" approach. I pay close attention to the relationships within a client's life, provide tools on how to effectively challenge troubling thoughts and behaviors, and take into consideration the individual's past experiences.

Therapy is a complex process. The components of time and commitment are vital for clients in diving into their mental wellbeing. If you feel ready, I invite you with the assisted guidance from myself, to cultivate a deepened relationship with your SELF. Many of my clients have been supported through periods of depression, anxiety, life transitions, relationships, complex trauma and addiction. There is no judgement in our work together, as every person is different and full of their own unique experiences that has led them to where they are now. I also proudly identify as and work with the chronically ill community.

I aim to work with people from where they truly are in life, no matter how difficult. My patients come from every race, orientation, and ethnic or religious background. They confront a wide range of adversities and challenges. And they arrive with many different experiences and strengths. Perhaps the only thing they have in common is a desire to live to the best of their ability.

In my practice, I help individuals move through some of the most difficult moments in their lives the strong emotional tides and automatic responses that are often inherent to any unexpected life change, or past traumatic experiences. Our everyday responses to stress - anxiety, anger, irritability, bouts of depression, or fatigue and the effectiveness of our ability to cope with current stressors are often related to painful past experiences, some recent and some from long ago. My practice is dedicated to offering individuals the supports necessary to navigate through pain from our past to a place of resiliency.

Dealing with unexpected new experiences can be scary and exhausting but also hopeful and exhilarating. Scary and exhausting, because we don’t know what is to come and are stumbling in the dark. Hopeful and exhilarating because new beginnings are full of promise and an opportunity to do it over. Adopting a “beginner’s mind” we can approach the vagaries of life with openness and find the courage to explore different ways of viewing our situation. As a therapist I help my clients develop the resilience they already have within them and to find courage in the face of adversity.

Especially for some of the most successful among us, we can hold ourselves to the highest standards of performance in all areas. Sometimes we may feel that we're supposed to have all the answers to the challenges life throws our way, even when that isn’t always possible. An achievement focus can come at the expense of other areas of our lives. I see therapy as a collaborative experience. I work with individuals and couples to help unlock what holds them back to gain an understanding of how our histories shape our present, while building a foundation of skills in the here-in-now to promote healing and a future that is self-defined.

Humanistic Therapists

How does humanistic therapy work?

One tenet of humanistic therapy is that people are good. The humanistic approach is concerned with a person’s ability to accept oneself. It likewise encourages a person to overcome self-criticism and self-defeating tendencies, as well as disapproval from others. This approach also emphasizes self-actualization and treating an individual as a whole person. A foundation of this therapy type: The patient is the expert in their life, and treatment often takes the individual’s lead.

Is humanistic therapy evidence-based?

Humanistic therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has found that humanistic therapy can lead to significant improvement, and for some people it can be just as effective as other therapies, such as Cognitive behavioral therapy. The benefits of humanistic therapy are enduring.

How long does humanistic therapy last?

The goal of humanistic therapy is to understand a person’s day-to-day experiences. While sessions can be short-term and last over a few months, therapy can sometimes continue beyond that and last up to a year or more. And because patients learn the theory behind humanistic therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is humanistic therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with humanistic therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in addressing poor self-esteem and self-sabotage, as well as improving conditions including anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can be long standing, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve learned during treatment.
