When it comes to sex and relationship problems, many of us lead lives of quiet desperation. Sometimes you can be lying in bed next to someone and feel a million miles apart. I am a licensed psychotherapist, specializing in couple therapy and sex therapy. I am the New York Times best-selling author of "She Comes First," and I regularly contribute to major publications such as The Atlantic, The Economist and CNN Health amongst others. Talking about sex and relationships is hard, but self-silencing is even harder. My approach is solutions-oriented, with an emphasis on honest communication, and I give homework in between sessions.

When you lose the ability to connect with others or your connections are unfulfilling, you may choose to settle for just getting by. You may put on a happy face because it seems easier while pushing more painful emotions aside. Maybe you fear if you show your true self you will lose control or worse, be seen as unlovable. You feel stuck - perhaps struggling to even identify what is causing you pain. I get it. Facing fear, shame, self-doubt or past injuries can be overwhelming and the prospect of change daunting, especially when you think you have to do it by yourself.

As a clinical social worker, the bulk of my experience outside of private practice is within the school system. I have been able to work directly with students, teachers, and families on a wide range of issues that are worked on through therapy. I have experience in areas such as: relationship issues (family, romantic, professional etc.), parenting issues, developmental disabilities, depression, anxiety, autism, grief, stress, trauma, and more. In private practice, I appreciate working directly with families, children, individuals, and educators on their presenting needs outside of the constraints of the academic setting.

Note: I am on parental leave and will return in January 2024. Therapy can provide new perspectives during a time when the world seems disconnected and life feels overwhelming. As a licensed clinical psychologist, I provide evidence-based psychotherapies for individuals struggling with anxiety, stress, panic attacks, depression, self-esteem, relationship issues, and life transitions. Living a life consistent with our values is a common, and often elusive, goal. To support my clients in this endeavor, I integrate evidence-based psychotherapies with relational and process-oriented techniques.

I understand how difficult it can be to seek support. Oftentimes, we put other's needs and wants before our own. My therapy sessions utilize a holistic approach. This means, I will offer the very best support possible by viewing each client as a whole person versus only focusing on a specific mental health need. Therapy time will be spent discussing client's emotional, social, physical and spiritual health. I have several years of experience working with many different clients struggling with a multitude of mental health concerns.

Often, despite knowing what they "should" or "could" do to achieve personal growth, people feel stuck in similar patterns. Others feel lost or that they don't feel content. So many of life's challenges evoke painful feelings, including sadness, fear, anxiety, frustration, loneliness, and isolation. I see therapy as a space where I can help my patients understand those feelings and how they relate to their personal, familial and cultural narratives. With that in hand, patients gain freedom and confidence in how they choose to navigate the world.

Footprints was started by a therapist who realized that often times the services provided to low socio-economic communities is lacking quality care. We noticed these communities were confronted with long wait times, disrespectful admins, and subpar treatment. The one and only purpose was to exploit the community for profit without providing the level of care deserved. Feel Better Therapy began from the inspiration to provide quality mental health care to the poorest of communities and treating the clients of this community the same way a rich patient would be treated in a clinic treating affluent clients.

In our sessions together, you can expect my therapeutic style to be warm, empathetic and person-centered. Therapy should not be one-size-fits-all and I recognize that every client brings a different story to session. You are the expert of your own experience and I will take the time to understand how we can collaborate together to work on your own personal therapeutic goals. We will work to help you develop new tools, process your experiences, emphasize your strengths and celebrate the little victories along the way.

You begin to heal when you feel heard and understood. You are unique; no one is you, and that’s your greatest power. YOU are in control, but that doesn’t mean you have to do it alone! Life can be overwhelming and difficult to manage at times, choosing to face challenges and work on yourself can be scary. It takes creativity, courage, and self-awareness to make healthy changes. Working in a non-judgmental and empathetic environment with a positive therapeutic connection can help you tap into your own ability to explore and overcome the challenges in your life.

Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
