We are surrounded by a story that unwanted feelings are pathological, an illness to be eradicated by taking medication, relentlessly policing thoughts, and consuming a never-ending supply of self-care products and services. Taken alone, that narrative can conceal deeper causes of distress by focusing solely on how well you adjust to and cope with their effects. Lasting relief requires a more holistic approach, one that accurately identifies and addresses the personal, social, and structural barriers that are keeping you stuck.

Are you feeling isolated in your relationships? While romance may begin in an instant, long-term relationships are not easy to maintain alone. No matter where you are in your relationship, seeking guidance, opening the lines of communication, and establishing safety in emotional expression are the cornerstones of any lasting and fulfilling relationship. I aim to empower my clients to realize the strengths they already possess. I work with them, both individually and as couples and families, to utilize those unique strengths to develop a positive narrative for their lives and relationships.

My approach to therapy is to get to know you, the client, first in order to hear your narrative and help identify themes that pop up and contribute to how you think, feel, behave, and interact today.
I work with men, women, and couples over 18 years of age. No matter what your reason is for seeking therapy, you deserve someone to witness your truth without reaction. You might be unsure whether you’re justified being in therapy or tell yourself that things aren’t really that bad and that you’re okay. But allowing someone to just be there with you creates the space to look at your expectations, thoughts, and feelings, and see what you want to do with them. It's valuable for someone to be part of your journey to help you explore what your narrative is and how it is affected by patterns and dynamics that affect all of us.

Prior to becoming a therapist, I was an academic researcher whose work examined forms of personal narrative.
I am a New York-based psychotherapist seeing individuals and couples. When working together, it is essential that I come to know and really understand what you’re struggling with and what you want for yourself. In this way, we can work from what you need and where you want to go. You'll have my attention and presence, my compassion and emotional sensitivity, my intelligence, warmth, and insightfulness as resources to draw on throughout the process.

I have trained extensively in child and adolescent therapy, narrative and couples therapy, and sex therapy.
Whether working with couples, adolescents, families, or adult individuals, I see the therapy room as a place for clients to discuss the parts of themselves and their lives that they can’t talk about anywhere else. My approach is open, playful, and creative. As we work together to identify and address the parts within yourself that may be anxious, overly protective, or deeply wounded, you will be better able to be the wisest, most mature version of yourself.

I use a combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solutions Focused Therapy, and Narrative Therapy, so that you ca.
There’s nothing I find more gratifying than helping my clients redefining purpose in their lives. While we are in a constant struggle with the expectations of others, we often lose sight of who we are ourselves. We negotiate, toil, and sacrifice—sometimes without even knowing why.

Narrative Therapists

Is narrative therapy evidence-based?

Narrative therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy. Some small studies do show that depressed and anxious individuals who were treated with narrative therapy reported improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.

How long does narrative therapy last?

Narrative therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Narrative therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a few months, and sometimes a year or longer. Patients see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a person’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of narrative therapy after treatment has ended.

Does narrative therapy work?

Narrative therapy can help a person manage or reduce symptoms of conditions like depression or anxiety. This type of therapy encourages a person to reflect on the moments of their life when their particular problem was not at the forefront of their minds—perhaps life celebrations, achievements, and other successes. The individual is encouraged to rewrite their storyline as if their particular problem was not part of their life. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure.

What are the possible limitations of narrative therapy?

Narrative therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the health professional pays more attention to the subjective narratives that are constructed by the client, as opposed to other objective measures. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over all others. This open form may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every individual.
