As a license Marriage Therapist I worked in the addiction and mental health fields, and served adults of all ages from different cultures and background.
The last few years have been especially challenging: COVID, changes in social structure, inflation and other unsettling issues. Do you find yourself with unsettling intrusive thoughts, confused and/or anxious? Do you feel stuck in life? Are depression and anxiety blocking you from living your life? Don't give up. You don't have to do it alone. We can do it together. There is significant strength in seeking support and guidance when you need it.

I am advanced trained in Gottman Method Couples Therapy and an Educator for The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work by John Gottman.
If you are suffering from anxiety, panic attacks, or PTSD symptoms, relief is possible. I will help you learn to reduce the impact and influence of unwanted thoughts and learn to develop the capacity to observe and feel and make use of your emotional and physical experience. I use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), exposure therapy, mindfulness, and somatic psychotherapy to help you learn to stop fighting with your feelings and thoughts, and allow them to come and go without a struggle. This frees up energy to live a full, rich, connected life. You can overcome panic and anxiety and heal and grow after trauma.

I help new Moms and Dads as they adjust into parenthood. I also help bereaved parents deal with the loss of their babies. This includes hopeful parents who are struggling with infertility, pregnancy loss, as well as parents who are feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. I work with Moms who are having trouble adjusting to incredible exhaustion and new demands of motherhood, intense mood swings and irritability, and a scary isolation you can feel when you are caring for a newborn baby. I work with heartbroken parents who have lost their precious babies - either during pregnancy or after birth.

Do you feel like you keep getting into the same kind of relationship? Do you have emotional reactions that are bigger than the situation? Our past experiences shape the negative messages we have about ourselves and the world. We can work to reveal and rewrite those messages so that you can move forward toward the life you want.

Many of us have heard or believe that we're "too much" throughout our lives—too emotional, too challenging, too overwhelming, or too far gone to deserve the things, relationships, and lives we long for. This messaging can lead to difficulties setting boundaries, fear of independence, or isolation to avoid feelings of shame and disappointment when our needs go unmet. I believe that big emotions are not a sign that something is “wrong” with you, but rather are healthy signals seeking respect and attention to guide you toward your true self.

I work with clients to find a new perspective on life. Growing up, we are told/hear things about what we “should” do or how we “should” feel. Should statements can cause clients to struggle with anxiety, depression, issues with connections with themselves or others, and much more. I view clients as the expert in their life and work with them to find their authentic selves by working on compassion, acceptance, and empowerment. Our world has changed, and societal expectations are changing, this gives us all the opportunity to discover our true priorities. How we show up for ourselves, friends, family, relationships, and our careers.

Life and its challenges can get pretty overwhelming! I strive to work collaboratively with people to create positive changes in a caring and non-pathologizing environment for those who are struggling with a variety of problems. My guiding approach to effective therapy focuses on seeing the problem as separate from the person. I believe that people are the experts of their lives. I choose to sit in a place of curiosity to help you uncover already present strengths or develop new approaches to life's challenges.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
