I am a licensed clinical psychologist with a special focus on providing therapy for adults and couples. Depression, anxiety, personality disorders, relationship conflicts, unhealthy behaviors, and identity issues are among the broad areas in which I practice. Though the reasons you are seeking therapy might fit into one of these categories, your experiences and circumstances are unique--as is the way you communicate, your personality, and your sensibilities. I consider understanding who you are as a person, your desires and challenges, to be my primary task.

I am sure that finding a therapist at this moment is difficult for you. One wants to choose a therapist who has just the right sensibility. Having been in practice for 30 years has taught me to be present and listen carefully to your needs. As a Family Therapist I think about all the elements that influence and impact your life, your work, your family and your friends. As a Systemic Thinker I know that your attachment to others and your interpersonal skills determine how you feel. I hope you will consider this as you search for a new therapist.

I work primarily from a psychodynamic perspective, meaning that I believe past experiences shape our present and that insight into these patterns can help enact change and promote improved well-being.
Whether you face specific challenges or are interested in self-exploration, I provide a non-judgmental and compassionate space to explore thoughts and feelings, build upon your strengths, change patterns that no longer serve you, and develop effective coping strategies. I work with children, adolescents and adults with a range of therapeutic needs, including mood disorders, anxiety, life transitions and relationship stressors. I also provide assessments for children and adolescents who may require and benefit from accommodations in school or for standardized testing.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
