I specialize in treating women with body image struggles, eating disorders, anxiety, and trauma.
Despite being smart, capable, and appearing like you have it all together, on the inside you feel broken, discouraged, and anxious. You find yourself in patterns of over-eating, binging, restricting or purging and aren’t sure why. Being in your body feels intolerable. You are desperate to feel better and feel frustrated for not being able to figure out why you are stuck. You have tried so many things that “should” have helped you feel better, but can’t get out of this cycle and feel like a failure. Maybe there are painful things that have happened in your past that are keeping you stuck and you feel like you can't get over.

I specialize in treating depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, self-esteem, and family relationships.
I have helped many people in my career who have struggled with anxiety, depression, family issues, self-esteem, loss/grief, abuse, and many other issues to find greater happiness, meaning and contentment in their lives. Patients will be valued, heard, and respected no matter how difficult the issues may be to talk about. Therapy will feel like a collaborative emotional processing and problem-solving endeavor designed to lift burdens, negative thoughts and feelings. The goal would be to reach greater levels of self-respect and assertiveness in coming to value one's own needs at least as importantly as others.

I have 15 years of experience working with individuals with eating disorders and body image struggles.
Do you have that voice in the back of your mind that constantly tells you how awful you are, the one that is relentless and won’t go away? Sometimes in life we feel overwhelmed, disconnected, and unable to take care of our needs. We take this out on food, our bodies, and those we love. It can be difficult to face things, even if we want to. Despite our best efforts we find ourselves feeling defeated and worry we are failing. This might be because you have difficult things in your life that are keeping you from being able to make the changes you desire. Seeking counseling is a brave step in reconnecting with yourself and your life.

My specialties include: eating disorders, OCD, trauma, depression, anxiety, and faith transitions.
Many of us struggle with our mental health. Some of us have depression, others struggle with anxiety, many suffer with other diagnoses. It can be overwhelming, discouraging, and frustrating. I am here to help you make the transition to living a fuller life, find healing, and meet your goals. Our collaboration will be based on honesty, respect, compassion, and kindness.

Maybe you're struggling to navigate the complexity of a faith transition or another major shift in your life. Or maybe your performance in sports, school, or work has suffered recently and you're not sure how to get back on track. Reaching out for help, far from a sign of weakness, reflects resourcefulness and courage. It is the first major step toward progress.

Hi! I’m Marki and I want to be your new therapist! I’m kind, compassionate, and sassy. If that sounds like your kind of therapist then read on my friend. I’ve found that everyone wants to belong to something. Many of us spend years searching for what that is without realizing it already exists. I’m passionate about helping people find where they belong and how to use that to fulfill their purpose in life. I love helping others to be vulnerable and working through shame (it sucks, but you gotta do it). I believe it’s vital to implement self compassion in your life as well as introducing productive change that YOU are in charge of.

I specialize in working with individuals who face trauma, eating disorders, body image challenges, insecurities, unhealthy relationships, partners who have an addiction, unstable family situations and ethnic or cultural discrimination.
One of my all-time favorite quotes is “broken crayons still color”. To understand that you can feel broken and still have value is vital. It means that your worthiness is not based upon the things that have happened to you. Nor is it based upon your mistakes, your outward appearance, or your lack of friendships. The list goes on and on. My personal belief of worthiness means that it applies to ALL and bears no cost, much like the concept of grace. This is a belief I try to bring into all my sessions.

Eating Disorders Therapists

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
