Colleagues say to me, "people passing by your door want to know why there's always laughter coming out of your office." While being human sometimes is painful, I do my best to warmly connect with clients to lighten the load being carried. I believe that "Empathy is a radical act" and use basic therapy skills such as listening and validating to create a safe place to do the "scary" work of change. I believe people can find solutions to have fulfilling relationships.. no matter the challenges. Sometimes that takes creating inspiration..I'm here to do just that.

We experience difficulties. We are all worthy of love and belonging. I provide a safe haven, a supportive non-judgmental place to grow and heal. I enjoy sharing the journey as motivated individuals and couples release patterns which no longer serve them, while discovering their strengths, resilience, goals, and, new ways of being and sharing. Sometimes, we need to acknowledge our limitations and reach for help to find our way. I am here for clients as they explore feelings and needs, and discover paths to more vibrant, connected lives ~ while making changes, or being with "what is" with new perspectives.

I specialize in working with individuals who have experienced trauma, co-occurring disorders, and those who struggle with substance use.
I believe everyone has what it takes to find joy, peace, and love in their lives through vulnerability and connection. After working through my own trials, I discovered that I wanted to help others and decided to become a therapist. I found a love for listening to others and trying to understand how their stories have shaped their view of themselves and the world. I enjoy connecting with people by encouraging them to explore new ways to find happiness within themselves and their relationships.

I specialize in treating trauma, depression & anxiety.
Over the course of my 20 year career working in the behavioral health field, I have transitioned from being a strict cognitive behavioral therapist, to working from a trauma informed approach to treating a variety of conditions with EMDR, cognitive therapy, behavioral treatments, mindfulness, clinical yoga, attachment theory, and ketamine assisted psychotherapy. Human beings are COMPLEX and psychotherapy works better when the provider and client work collaboratively to develop a treatment plan as unique as that individual! I commonly work with people to target their symptoms of PTSD, depression, anxiety, and family trauma.

I have received extensive post graduate training in EMDR with children, Parent/Child Interaction Therapy, and Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
I graduated from Brigham Young University with a Masters of Education in School Psychology in 1994 and with a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 2003. As part of that training, I completed a doctoral level internship in clinical child psychology at Primary Children's Hospital. Since then, I have worked in a variety of settings, specializing in child psychology. The majority of my clinical experience has been in working with children who have been traumatized, but I feel comfortable treating the entire range of childhood psychiatric disorders. Overall, I have been working with emotionally/behaviorally challenged children for over 25 years.

Anxiety, life transition, mountain trauma, and relationship concerns are my specialties.
Life is a challenging adventure. I work best with people who are curious about getting unstuck and pursuing their goals. Whether it is stagnation in your career, challenges in your relationship, or anxiety about the many "what ifs" we face each day, asking questions and exploring possibilities provides a way forward. Learning more useful strategies to cope and engage with challenges will be a cornerstone of our work together.

The one thing you can always count on in life, is that it will always change no matter if we are ready or not. Whether there is a struggle with trauma, depression, anxiety, a difficult transition in your life, or feeling overwhelmed, it is important to set aside time just for you; to explore, heal, and learn in an environment free of judgment or assumptions. Therapy is a way to be heard, emotions validated, and to gain a new perspective that will allow you to move forward.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
