Looking to move past your past? Suffering from Trauma? EMDR can change behaviors, reduce feelings and triggers quickly. I have 20 years in the caring field, and I found it is not uncommon as human beings that when we suffer a traumatic event or life stressors our entire world unravels as well. My passion is to help you get your life back on track, heal, and be emotionally whole. I assist my clients in gaining insight into their unhealthy behaviors and learn new ones. I use the Gottman method of communication for couples and individuals. I understand the happy and the painful side of relationships too.

My ideal client is one with a history of trauma. Whether that was some form of mental, emotional, physical, or sexual abuse during childhood, issues within adolescence, or trauma experienced during your adult life, I will work with you to overcome the issues that extend from those traumatic experiences. Those who suffer with depression, anxiety, suicidal ideations/actions, PTSD, behavioral issues, and much more.

When you meet with Ruth, you can expect to feel comfortable, empathy toward your issue(s), not judged, soothed by humor, and treated as an equal. You'll be heard and offered suggestions to help you address your challenges. Ruth's clients can overcome debilitating emotions, relational issues, life struggles such as past traumatic experiences, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and more. She uses active listening and offers empowering tools to overcome negative thoughts and feelings that limit their daily lives. Modalities she draws from include EMDR, DBT, DBT, mindfulness, biofeedback, and stress management training.

As a mental health clinician, it is my intention to create a safe, open, therapeutic space for individuals to explore, process, learn and grow from their unique experiences, while fostering connection and building their skill set. I believe we will work together to help you thrive through a process of identification and reflection, exploring cognition and need for emotional expression. My goal as a therapist is to create a safe, non-judgmental, trusting environment to hold space for open-minded mind body connection.

For me, working with teens and their families, along with couples and individuals, is my vocation rather than my profession. I help families and teens make sense of the struggles faced by kids and their parents today. I help couples rebuild strong bonds. I guide individuals into a heightened awareness of themselves and their world. Another professional/personal passion is Cancer. In this domain, it really takes one to know one (and their caretakers). Guiding either the patient or caretaker is a new mission for me. I work closely with the sentiments in Dr. Kelly Turner's books - Radical Remission and Radical Hope.

As a therapist, my strength is helping people clarify their goals and unearth behaviors that are counterproductive in achieving those goals. Together, we develop a personalized plan, that includes new methods and tools to resolve current and future challenges in an effective and healthy manner.

Life can be unpredictable and often messy. When we least expect it we are faced with unexpected events that leave us confused, hurt and frequently bewildered. My passion is to restore individual, families and marriages. I am highly trained in the area of individual therapy, couples therapy divorce, premarital counseling and grief therapy. We will work together to help you break free from negative thought patterns that lead to destructive behaviors. My goal is to support you with compassion, objective listening, supportive guidance, healing strategies, and hope. Many of us move through life carrying significant emotional burdens that hold us back from living a fuller life. Sometimes we feel stuck, hurt, overwhelmed, frustrated, angry, scared, devastated, confused, anxious, depressed, lonely, lost, etc. Sometimes we’re unaware of what we’re carrying and why, or the extent or ramifications of the weight. My role is to walk alongside you to bring those items into the light, and provide a safe space to examine and process them together.

My journey started in Dubuque, Iowa where I went to Clarke University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. I completed by Master of Arts in Counseling at Colorado Christian University. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Addiction Counselor. I am passionate about working with clients who struggle with anxiety, depression, anger, substance abuse, relationships, and trauma. I work with clients who are experiencing struggles with anxiety, depression and relationships. This include “people pleasing”, difficulties with self-compassion, navigating relationships that may be clouded by the tendency to highly value harmonious relationships, struggling with issues related to Narcissistic abuse, trying to “fit in” to a world that often feels draining and overstimulating, having difficulty speaking up in their relationships because they’d rather avoid conflict, and who are wanting to explore what the invitation of their symptom(s) or problem might be.

People have an inherent need to be understood and tell their story in order to live the life they imagine. My job as therapist is to listen, and learn from you and guide you toward better self-care, and to make the changes necessary to look inside yourself to see what might be holding you back from living a full happy life. As a licensed clinical social worker, I believe often times the things which keep us from moving forward are in our environment, such as toxic relationships, poverty, lack of education, drugs and alcohol, and past traumas.

I do not judge people that is not my role. I am open to all individuals who want to make a change in their lives and I feel fortunate to be a part of that journey with the person. I believe this is a partnership between myself and my client to explore what the issues may be, come up with treatment goals and then work on these changing them if needed as we progress.

With a focus on the complex ad crucial connections between mind and body, I am able to provide an empathetic and empowering attitude toward your emotional struggles, aspirations, and personal growth.

Melanie Sweet is a Licensed Professional Counselor who has been practicing since 2017. Melanie has been working in the mental health field for over 20 years. Melanie graduated from the University of Southern Maine in 2006 with her BS in Social and Behavioral Services and then in 2015 from Southern New Hampshire University with her MS in Community Mental Health. Melanie believes in using components of multiple modalities in therapy (including but not limited to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy).
