I help individuals and couples work on trauma, psychological and relational issues and behaviors so that they can resolve them and enrich their lives. I have been a clinical psychologist since the mid-eighties and I view our work together as a collaborative process. I will begin by learning about and understanding you and your problem and we will figure out together what has contributed to your difficulties. The next step is to create a treatment plan tailored to you and your goal/s. Treatment consists of resolving these difficulties and re-accessing joy and interest in life.

Many people choose to enter therapy to gain a deeper understanding of themselves – their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in addition to problems in their interpersonal relationships.  Oftentimes, the issues we face in the present stem from painful experiences in the past.  As a result of these experiences, we develop ways of coping in the world – some continue to serve us well and others may get in the way of us living a more fulfilling life. I offer a warm, non-judgmental, and safe environment for exploration, healing, and growth.

Contemporary life does not offer us many opportunities for reflecting and slowing down. Coming to therapy is a way of prioritizing these practices and making meaning of the dynamics that structure our reality. Change is intrinsic to the human experience, and yet many of us become fearful of change or stuck in patterns and relationships that do not serve us. I strive to provide a secure environment to work alongside individuals as they define and develop the fabric of their identity, confront the sources of their distress, and integrate already existing strengths and resources into a more cohesive experience of who they are.

I work to meet people where they are in their journey. With collaboration, clients and I build environments that facilitate wellness and growth. I value the importance of a non-judgmental and supportive approach in the creation of spaces that celebrate diverse identities. In practicing intersectional and trauma-informed therapy, I am committed to holding space for individuals with marginalized identities. Additionally, I welcome anyone with experiences of multiplicity, DID, DDNOS, or dissociation. My practice focuses on addressing challenges related to the here-and-now, as well as past experiences.

According to the great poet Rainer Maria Rilke, "The only journey is the journey within." We all need help sometimes and we all have room to grow. I believe that everyone can benefit from therapy, whether it is to address a severe mental illness, to receive support through a rough season of life, or to gain greater self-knowledge and unleash your full potential. My professional interests include psychoses, dissociative disorders, depression, anxiety, trauma, narcissistic abuse, and obesity.

I am a kind, skilled therapist who will meet you where you are at, and work with you to find a path towards your hopes and dreams. You can choose from a variety of healing practices such as mindfulness and movement, or cognitive therapy, to gather resources that will help you heal both the mind and the body. I work with children and adults, with trauma and dissociative disorders, mood disorders (anxiety, depression), ADHD, and big emotions and behaviors. I also consult with groups (schools, institutes), individuals and parent groups, to educate about trauma and parenting. Lets "zoom" or meet in my office!

I believe past experiences can have a lasting impact on the present in ways that are sometimes hard to make sense of, such as negative relationship patterns, feeling stuck or overwhelmed, anger, shame, confusion, intimacy issues, concerns connected to gender identity and sexuality, or just doing things in life that aren’t working but you don’t understand why. My work helps people gain insight into how the past may be impacting the present, and foster the strength to express and stay true to their own needs and desires.

The stigma behind psychotherapy is based on the notion that somehow asking for help and working with a professional means that one is weak. Ironically, this could not be further from the truth. Making the decision to look at your story and explore how patterns within it have impacted your goals, relationships, losses, parenting, work and outlook is profoundly difficult to do. It is looking at ourselves with the commitment to not look away until we have developed tools to build futures that give us joy and magnify our strengths. All while now knowing how to address our challenges more effectively.

It takes courage to recognize and accept when we might need help. Finding the right therapist to help may be even more challenging. My therapeutic philosophy is based on the idea that each of us has the capacity for healing and growth within ourselves. Therapy should provide you with the space to be your true and authentic self, without judgment, allowing you the freedom to realize your capacity to create meaning in your life. We will work together to develop a relationship rooted in safety and trust so that you can make choices and changes at a pace that feels right for you.

I work comfortably with people from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds, and people within the LGBTQ community. In my practice I see adults, adolescents, and couples. I have a direct, interpersonal style in which I support and assist individuals in meeting their personal goals while helping them to process past and present issues related to trauma, child abuse/neglect, addiction(s), grief and loss, depression, or anxiety that may be interfering with their progress. I approach my clinical practice from a socially conscious perspective, working always to view personal difficulties within the sociocultural context in which we live.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Therapists

How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?

Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like Cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.

Are there specific medications for dissociation?

There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.

How often and how long are therapy sessions?

Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
