My special interests include family counseling, relationship concerns, parenting concerns, women's issues, developmental transitions, ADHD, depression, anxiety, spirituality, career issues, communication, and self-esteem difficulties.
My theory of counseling is that people have specific behaviors they would like to change, which are caused by our irrational, self-defeating beliefs learned from earlier life experiences. My goal will be to assist with change of the irrational and self-defeating beliefs to change undesired behaviors and circumstances. Counseling is a personal exploration that leads to major changes in your life perspectives and decisions. These changes may affect significant relationships and understanding of yourself. Some of these life changes could be temporarily distressing. Together we will work to achieve the best possible results for you.

I am open to working with all spiritual orientations or keeping spirituality out of the therapeutic experience if this is what is desired.
I believe that one of the most successful outcomes to treatment depends on the therapeutic relationship. This involves the client feeling safe and trusting of the therapist while he/she explores emotional vulnerabilities and painful thought processes. My hope is that you will experience me as someone who actively listens to you and works with you to develop effective problem-solving strategies.

Don’s passion to come along side others in the capacity of a professional counselor is an outgrowth of his life transformations occurring from his own counseling through his ilife experiences. Don is a “life veteran” who recovered from a divorce, raising two sons on his own as well as other personal life struggles requiring him to acknowledge first hand how the counseling process brings about effectual positive movement away from difficult circumstances. Don received his counseling degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, where he had the opportunity to incorporate Christian spirituality into his mental health practices.

Our three defining commitments to depth, spirituality, and community flow from another.
As a depth therapy practice, we are committed to overcoming the discontent that is the source of fractured selves, families, and communities. Awareness of and compassion for one's own self and for others requires the growth of emotional intelligence. Therapists at CPFS have experienced in our own journeys how the difficult work of self-confrontation can lead to greater resilience, humility, love, and industry. We work to build strong voices, accepting homes, and caring communities.

Life is filled with ups and downs. Depression, anxiety, and grief are among the most common reasons people seek a counselor. There is good reason for optimism- for many, these challenges are temporary. Any significant life event can cause upsets and create hardships adjusting. You are certainly not alone. Small steps and changes can lead to big differences in lives. Goals need to be reasonable and not overwhelming, accomplished at the client's pace. I often ask clients if we are moving too fast..or too slow? Spirituality is important, and I recognize the impact that a person's culture, values, and faith can have in the process.

As a compassionate guide, I nurture their spiritual journey, integrating spirituality into well-being.
The most helpful psychotherapy is a collaborative respectful relationship that honors your innate healing abilities. I will create a safe space for you to explore situations that are currently hindering you from living the life you desire. These might include past or recent traumatic experiences, behaviors that feel compulsive and/or harmful, life transitions, societal pressures, or the desire to "have it all together." Sometimes we seek relief in the wrong places which leaves us emotionally burnt out and seeking answers externally when the key to change is within.

If spirituality is important in your life, we will integrate your beliefs into the therapy process.
Breaking free from unhealthy patterns in our lives can be difficult. Emotions may feel out-of-control at times and self-defeating thoughts may run amok in our minds. We might feel trapped in isolation, unhealthy relationship cycles or struggle to move beyond past hurts, traumatic experiences or our own mistakes. There is hope. It is possible to heal from the past, gain control of our emotions and develop new ways of thinking and relating to others. I would be honored to have the opportunity to walk with you on your journey towards increased peace of mind, meaningful connections and renewed purpose.

Spirituality Therapists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
