Often the safest way to cope with the aftershock of childhood trauma & neglect is to create a workable persona or "protector," vigilantly committed to keeping us safe by avoiding further emotional injury at any cost. As adults, day-to-day challenges trigger our protective parts with anxiety-provoking situations that elicit reactive, shielding responses, & keep us stuck looping in repetitive cycles. While these protective defenses with their "never again" mantra had reliably sheltered our vulnerability in the past, today they function as painful reminders of lingering wounds and barriers to joyful, meaningful connection with others.

I offer walk and talk or telehealth sessions and specialize in anxiety, OCD, and faith/spiritual issues.
Have you ever found yourself frozen in place? Maybe it's the stress of a decision, or concern about navigating relationships. Or there are too many things to juggle, and any move seems like the wrong one. Perhaps your mind always gravitates toward worst-case scenarios. Whatever the cause, it is possible to get unstuck, and even to find direction and greater peace. Sometimes this means working from the top down - what unhealthy rhythms are in your life, and how can they be replaced with things that tend to wholeness and freedom? Sometimes, this means working from the bottom up, addressing past wounding and how it carries into today.

Waitlist for new clients
I have worked for several years with individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, past trauma, grief and loss, personal growth, transition to college, behavioral issues as well as relationship problems.
Life is hard! But it is also beautiful and rewarding. We can’t have joy, love and excitement without pain, disappointment, and rejection. I.e., we can’t just pick and choose the “good” feelings – we have to feel all of our feelings. Acceptance of things as they come, without evaluating or attempting to change them, is a skill developed through mindfulness exercises in and out of session. I utilize ACT to help individuals recognize ways in which their attempts to suppress, manage, and control emotional experiences are getting in the way of living a more authentic values based whole hearted life.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
