Most clients I see are experiencing general psychosocial health concerns and grief concerns.
My approach to mental health is holistic, which means I incorporate methods of treatment aside from strictly talk therapy. I believe it is important to take a look at a client's lifestyle - support networks (family and friends), nutrition, exercise, stress management, sleeping and waking patterns, mindfulness, fun, relaxation, sense of community, managing finances, self-care, etc. in order to help the client find their balance and feel their very best.

Life can be hard. Therapy helps! I work with those dealing with long-term health issues, cancer, and grief and loss. I offer individual counseling for many other issues, including navigating major life transitions, depression, anxiety, unresolved trauma and childhood physical, sexual and emotional abuse, issues of self-esteem/self-worth, geriatric mental health, and family of origin issues. I view therapy as a collaborative process that can help provide insight, direction, and comfort. I offer HIPAA-compliant telehealth sessions for residents of Washington and Idaho who are 18 and older.

Understanding your needs and motivations, solving communication issues, boundary setting and assertiveness training, conflict resolution, anger management, grief and loss care, and (co-)parenting skills can make your relationships happier.
You don’t have to be sick to be Building Healthier Relationships (BHR). BHR is about developing a better toolbox to enhance relationships with yourself and others, and to provide a safe, nurturing environment for learning and healing. Life isn’t just a bowl of cherries—it also includes the PITs. In life, the PITs (Prevention, Intervention, and Treatment) provide the seeds for future cherries. While we are all victims at times, healing starts with moving from a victim mentality of blaming others to the survivor mentality of taking responsibility—not for what happened in the past, but for how to go forward.

I also have experience working with teens, young adults, and older adults with depression, grief/loss, and trauma.
**AS OF 04/23/2024: CURRENTLY ACCEPTING A FEW NEW CLIENTS** Trying to focus on one task at a time can be challenging and sometimes boring. Emotions then take over and you find ways to release that tension in a negative way. During this time, it can cause conflict between family members, peers, and/or significant others. These negative thoughts/actions are easy to express and obvious strengths are pushed to the side. Having someone who has gone through this personally/professionally can provide active solutions, which can help develop a sense of ease and comfort within the family and individual.

It is my passion to work with individuals and couples who are struggling with the loss of emotional connection with the most significant people in their lives.
Many couples want to communicate better, and at the core, partners want to feel emotionally connected to each other. Oftentimes, the negative interaction cycles of blame-withdraw, attack-defend, demand-withdraw are actually indicators of emotional disconnection between partners. By identifying the cycle, couples can become more open to and engaged, can create new emotionally attuned connections, and can revitalize their relationship. Attention to the couples sexual relationship is interwoven throughout the couples therapy. Visit my website to connect with me more.

We live in a complicated world. The demands of work, home, caregiving, loss, transitions, as well as exposure to troubling events can all take their toll. Many of us need a place to breathe, heal, rejuvenate, and discover a better way forward. Together we can create a safe, confidential, uplifting environment in which to heal, learn and grow.

In addition to her Master of Social Work degree and an LICSW license, Jan has completed Level Two training in the evidence based Internal Family Systems (IFS) model; Lifespan Integration Level One training; 3 years with The Chaplaincy facilitating widow & children grief groups and individual bereavement support as well as ongoing trainings.
I feel passionate about working with individuals who are longing to find or reconnect with a sense of Self. Somehow life isn't working; something's "off." Whether searching for identity while transitioning to independence; wanting to rediscover who we are after caring for others; riding the roller coaster of grieving a death, divorce or another major life event to surviving abusive and/or confusing relationship(s), we all experience pain and confusion at times. Counseling can help open awareness to new and healthier ways to respond to life's challenges and hopefully thrive.

I believe that therapy can benefit all of us. It helps to reduce stress and can improve our overall quality of life. If you are experiencing difficulties with mood, anxiety, anger, trauma or grief, I may be able help. In my experience, the most important aspect of therapy is the building of rapport between you and your therapist. With this in mind, I focus first on listening, being curious and respecting the fact that the people who I work with are the experts on their own lives. With a foundation of understanding then in place, we can work on achieving your individual goals.

I believe that we all have things in life that we need help dealing with or working through. As a counselor I provide a safe, confidential, and nonjudgmental place for people to get the help they are seeking. I use several therapeutic modalities including cognitive behavioral, EMDR, Internal Family Systems, somatic experiencing and emotional focused therapy to name a few. When working with couples I use the Gottman marriage approach as well as the therapies listed above. I may explore with the client their past and present in order to promote self-discovery/awareness that will assist them with the outcome they desire.

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
