TELETHERAPY For more than 15 years I've worked with adults, couples, families, and adolescents in Illinois, DC, and Maryland. I often use a diverse and ethnically sensitive and relevant approach to treatment. It is my goal to provide a non-judgmental and welcoming space for clients to ultimately experience joy, develop more effective coping strategies, and best understand their life's purpose. I value the therapeutic connection and relationship that includes a non judgmental and empathetic environment.

As a humanistic psychotherapist, I am person-centered and focus on the uniqueness of each individual. I believe that a positive, empathetic relationship between therapist and client is essential to effective therapeutic change. Along with talk and insight work, I incorporate a wide variety of techniques into the therapeutic process, including cognitive-behavioral techniques, guided imagery, mindfullness practices, communication exercises, relaxation exercises and other awareness techniques.

TELETHERAPY APPOINTMENTS. I am an experienced, mature therapist who has provided therapy to those fighting addictions and mental health issues for over 15 years. I offer supportive counseling combined with assessment, planning and evidence-based techniques (CBT, DBT) to teach clients new ways to cope and move forward toward their goals. Joan uses a cognitive behavioral, trauma-informed, and integrative approach to help individuals and couples explore their thoughts, emotions, and life experiences. Joan is particularly interested in working with survivors of trauma, adults, couples, adolescents and their families, and individuals from marginalized communities. She takes a strengths-based, trauma-informed approach, recognizing the impact systemic oppression and stigma can have on a person's wellbeing.

Hello and welcome! Sometimes our lives are stable; however, there are times where we are suddenly confronted with traumatic experiences or losses, such as health problems (dx. of cancer or terminal illnesses), the death of a loved one, separation of the family, loss of work, problems with our children, or academic struggles. These situations can make us feel unsure of our own capacities and emotional strengths which can lead to increased vulnerability, and can cause us to start experiencing high levels of depression and anxiety, or other emotional pain/fears.

I do believe each person and family has unique resources to activate healing processes. Brief Therapy requires a highly collaborative approach between therapist and clients, and focuses on practical solutions and clear communication. Brief Therapy offers a maximum of 10 sessions but usually don't need that many to promote change in the problem that is presented. I work with individuals, couples and families with a variety of problems: marital conflict and affairs, depression and anxiety, children and adolescent problems, addiction, eating disorders, stress and work related problems. I also provide online-therapy services.

What makes therapy different from asking a coworker, friend or relative for their advice, is my approach to therapy.
