Taking a closer look at a difficult experience takes strength and I appreciate your reaching out for guidance and support. Whether to manage a recent event, like a significant loss or transition, or to process an early issue that continues to impact your sense of worth, my role is to come to understand your experience and to externalize the issue so we can approach it in a way that is manageable. We will examine to what degree practiced coping strategies support current needs and we will call on strengths and supports that serve you. I will offer you information and strategies useful in developing a sense of wellbeing.

I feel especially attuned to issues of grief, trauma, depression, and the spiritual seeking that often follows those experiences.
I often work with people who grapple with hard questions to which there is no one "right" answer. I offer a non-judegmental atmosphere in which each person can seek his or her own answers. Therapy is a co-creation. I work with each person to find what "speaks" to him / her. That may include talking, mindfulness practices, or creative arts therapies. Using these methods accesses parts of the brain that can't be reached through words alone, and puts people in the flow of their wisdom and creativity, from which solutions to problems can emerge.

My theoretical approach is adaptable, be it helping to cope with recent trauma or grief, or reducing the severity of chronic conditions such as low self esteem, anxiety and depression.
I believe that when you first begin therapy, you hope to make changes in yourself that will improve your life. Possible changes might include ending the feeling that you are basically bad, or always at fault, or never good enough, or unlovable. You are aware that such feelings have caused you to lose valued relationships, caused you failure in school or at work, and possibly caused you to behave in ways you regret. If you are usually depressed, anxious, lonely or feeling guilty, you hope that therapy will bring relief, that you can finally begin enjoying your life.

I work with individuals, couples, and families who are motivated to make changes, build insight, and strengthen their connections. I work with clients seeking support in addressing a range of challenges such as self-worth, intergenerational trauma/patterns, grief, conflict resolution, codependency, and interpersonal difficulties. My primary goal as your therapist is to assist you in identifying and overcoming the barriers that may be hindering your progress. Sometimes, these barriers can be self-imposed. We will work together to recognize the ways in which we unintentionally impede our own growth and well-being.

If you want to find ways to overcome life challenges, feel more confident, and have better relationships, I am here to help! I also love working with couples. I specialize in helping people move through the challenges of anxiety, grief/loss, and life transitions.
You are committed to feeling better, you've tried everything, but still you feel lost in the pain. You've always been able to "fix" things in your life, why not this? This time, you feel stuck. Maybe you feel gripped by anxiety or panic. Maybe you feel consumed by grief from trauma or loss of a person, pet, or life dream. Maybe you're finding yourself in new life circumstances (a significant health challenge, life milestone, career or relationship change) and wonder "who am I now"? Life has a way of challenging us. There is a way through.

If you’ve landed here, you are no doubt considering making some changes in your life and I'm glad to see that you are exploring your options for feeling better. People I work with typically feel worried, sad, overwhelmed or stressed, or are trying to cope with grief--before, during, or after--an important loss. Feeling stuck in old ways of thinking and behaving, having problematic relationships, or feeling uncomfortable with the status quo and wanting to improve one's quality of life are common themes that bring people to my office.

I enjoy and have expertise working with autistic teens/adults as well as individuals struggling with grief, anxiety, and depression.
Sometimes life doesn’t go the way we plan, and it's difficult to know how to navigate through the challenges we confront. Finding a therapist can be intimidating, and it takes courage to take the first step--so congratulations! Building rapport and trust are essential toward developing a collaborative therapeutic relationship. Therapy should never be a “one size fits all” approach, and I hope to help you feel validated and supported by acknowledging your own unique life journey. I work hard at creating an emotionally safe environment where you can feel free from biases and judgment.

I have worked intensively with clients impacted by grief/loss, trauma, domestic violence, sexual abuse, chemical/co-dependency, anger/impulse control problems, and life transitions.
I believe we come to our most difficult passages in life at opportune times in order to grow toward our true capacity and purpose. I respect that my clients possess the seeds of awareness and expertise to find answers and solutions to their own problems. My role is to facilitate a compassionate perspective to assist in working through difficult emotions, reactive defenses, or protective habits, and open attention back to fruitful areas. I am an advocate for personal development, collaborating in finding useful vantage points for expanding visibility, encouraging resolution, and resumption of the innate growth process.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
