I specialize working with first-generation millennial women who are navigating marriage, parenthood, new relationship or career changes. Although on the outside you may appear to "have it all together", internally you may struggle with feelings of inadequacy, have a hard time asking or receiving help, and fear failure or disappointing others. You want to feel more confident in asserting your boundaries, be better able to communicate your needs in relationships, and want to adapt more positive beliefs about yourself.

I see adolescents and adults for psychotherapy, consultation, and assessment. I also see younger patients for psychological testing and assessment. My therapeutic work is guided by the idea that psychological distress is often related to habitual ways of perceiving and interacting with the world--ways that have protected and helped in the past, but now get in the way of living a more satisfying, enjoyable, and meaningful life. I am practical but also value thoroughness and depth. Whether it is something quite specific or a vague feeling that something is wrong, I would love to be in your corner.

The best way to contact me is via email. I work with adolescents and young adults ages 13-40 experiencing anxiety, depression, and troubled relationships. I help individuals learn skills that help them regulate emotions in order to improve social relationships and daily function. My approach is a relational style of conversation to help individuals feel safe and willing to share about personal struggles. We then work together to increase insight and self-awareness through identifying negative behavioral patterns and building from innate strengths which helps one’s ability to make changes that improve their overall quality of life.

My passions as a counselor include helping teens struggling with anxiety and depression, improve motivation with school, helping emerging adults transition into adulthood, pre-marital counseling to help couples establish a strong foundation, and resolving family conflict.

I am passionate about helping others make peace with their suffering and overall live a more grounded life. I work with individuals (adolescents to adults), couples and families. I love helping others find new meaning after trauma and grief, manage depression and anxiety, as well as help others build healthy self-esteem. I specialize in teaching tools to help others better communicate and repair relationships, heal attachment wounds, gain skills to set healthy boundaries, time manage, build a secure attachment, self-motivate, and adjust to life changes, including medical diagnosis, breakups/divorce, loss, and career changes.

As humans, it is not a matter of ‘if’ we will encounter the less glamorous aspects of life, but ‘when’. Each of us has the innate capacity to work through moments of change and transformation although, at times, that truth may feel impossible, false, or inadequate. As a practicing clinical therapist, my intention is to collaborate with you to support your own inner power to regain control in your life within a nonjudgmental and confidential safe space. In fostering your unique abilities together through exploration, processing, and individualized modalities, it is my goal to empower you to aspire to your full potential.

A good therapeutic relationship holds a high level of confidence, allowing people to share all sides of themselves; their hopes and fears, wants and needs, dreams and doubts, their strengths and vulnerabilities. Good therapy provides awareness and new perspectives, helping people to place less focus on where they are and more importance on the direction they are moving. My passion as a therapist, is to provide a space for individuals, couples and families to learn, heal and grow on their unique journeys towards transformation and personal freedom.

Dr. Ami Owen received her undergraduate degree in Social Science and a minor in Psychology. She received her Master’s in General Family Therapy with an advanced emphasis on families and trauma. Dr. Owen also received a Doctorate in Counseling and is a Clinically Certified Trauma Professional. She is licensed in UT, ID, WA, AZ, TX, FL, CA, and is a nationally approved supervisor through the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT). She takes delight in mentoring therapists on the complexities of family systems and consults with providers across the country to improve systems approaches.

I appreciate the complexity of people. I believe in trying to understand all aspects in someone's life and recognizing the impact of their experiences, relationships, and understandings into the current way of life. There are reasons for certain beliefs about ourselves and others. I utilize my training and my own self in helping a client come to witness ideas and behaviors within themselves And then, find ways to make changes, find balance, and maybe even happiness.

As a Marriage and Family Therapist, I have a special interest couples suffering from trust issues and relational distress. I love working with college-aged women, because school and transitions are never an easy time, and I'd love to help them get through it in a positive way. I enjoy working with adults going through a wide variety of life transitions, whether it be gender, moving, or relationships!

I love working with clients (especially children, adolescents, and families!) from diverse backgrounds who are looking to find answers and solve any issues they may be struggling with. I am passionate about my work and believe in radical acceptance of all people. I am an LGBTQ+ affirmative psychologist. As a mother of five children, I understand many of the issues that families face and I strive to be a caring, upfront, and empathic psychologist who helps clients work toward achieving their goals. I also offer psychological testing.

I meet people where they're at in their therapy journey. I work with people who want online therapy outside of traditional therapy hours. I am available in the evenings, mornings, and weekends. I have experience working with people living with anxiety, depression, connection problems, stress, trauma, self harm, and suicidal thoughts. Everyone's answer is a bit different because each person has their own version of what progress looks like for them. You're taking the first step. Hope is a powerful tool. Research has shown that progress and healing can be made when someone has it. Adversity, challenges, trauma, abuse, betrayal, abandonment, long-term illness, couple and family conflict, divorce, single-parenting, blending families, and grief can cause anyone to struggle. I have experienced these things and chose to further my education to know how to pay it forward to others seeking relief. Even the most extreme circumstances can be neutralized through therapy.

I have been a youth mentor, a group facilitator, a child welfare worker, and have been working in family, group, and individual therapy.
