Life is difficult sometimes and can feel overwhelming, lonely, or sad. I have felt that way as well during parts of my life. It’s difficult not to have the multi faceted parts of our lives take a toll on our mental health. Grief, loss, addiction, and trauma are all part of my story. However, the stories we believe to be true of ourselves and others are capable of being rewritten. The important factor is identifying through discovery and support of how YOU are the author. Therapy isn't as much learning skills to overcome mental health issues as it is unlearning carried shame, guilt, and negative beliefs to become an emboldened you.

I value and celebrate individuals who come all walks of life. I believe there are strengths and perspectives to be found in the life experience we face each day. There are many pieces and parts that make us who we are; our life history, our race, gender, gender expression, age, sexual identities, abilities, religious beliefs, and spiritualities. Pieces that are apart of us, but not always in harmony. I believe as we acknowledge, explore and embrace these conflicts, we can find a new meaning to our suffering, new ways of coping, and a new perspective on life.

As a first-generation Asian immigrant to the U.S. and an ex-Mormon, I understand the difficulty of blending cultures, values, and faith transition. It is important to me to help individuals feel heard and give them a sense of belonging. I want my clients to be able to tell their stories without being judged and live fully without shame and guilt. In our sessions, you will gain a new perspective on yourself and find the confidence to take on any challenges in your life. I want you to be able to view your experiences through a different lens.

Substance misuse, trauma, identity concerns, men's issues, depression, anxiety, adjustment issues. These are just a few of the issues I specialize in working with in my practice. I have had 8 plus years working with adolescents and adults in various settings. My approach is a humanistic, client-centered, somatic and trauma focused approach. I am trained in EMDR and Brainspottting. I try and create an environment/therapuetic alliance that is relaxed, humorous yet confrontational and free of therapeutic jargon so that my clients can be authentic.

Let’s face it… IT’S HARD TO BE A MAN. We live in a time when many men are unlikely to ask for help, refusing to acknowledge past wounds that stand in the way of their deepest potential. I have worked extensively with men’s issues and male adolescents suffering the effects of limiting beliefs, life struggles, depression, anxiety, sex addiction and sexual trauma. Helping men of all ages overcome the blocks that keep them disconnected from themselves or their partners; whether it is being stuck in a frustrating cycle of repeating the same mistakes over and over to struggling with infidelity, porn addiction or sexual trauma.

Psychotherapy is a way to learn more about ourselves, find options for change, and develop skills for managing difficult situations and emotions. While the "story" of pain is important, I offer clients the opportunity to better understand the roots of distress, ways in which bodies hold emotional pain, and clear options for enhancing natural resilience. For over a decade, I have helped clients manage anxiety and depression and recover from addiction and trauma. I work with LGBT clients around trauma and discrimination. With training in EMDR, Gestalt Therapy, and CBT, I offer a variety of therapies based on individual need.

When you're in emotional pain or distress it can sometimes feel like there is no "sanctuary" to deal with life's challenges. My role is to create a safe space for self-exploration, understanding and healing. Through the therapeutic journey I help each client learn to recognize and embrace their authentic self, strengths and resilience.

With a collection of approaches and perspectives that are uniquely selected for the individual, one of the most fundamental aspects of therapy is a strong relationship between client and therapist. Since life is difficult and full of hardship, the moments we have to work together will be filled with compassion, sensitivity, authenticity, and courage. As we progress together, we will come to a realization: you already have it within you.

I believe we all can live a life full of joy, meaning, and intimacy. I also know that sometimes life presents us with challenges that get in the way and leave us feeling diconnected and out of balance. I specialize in helping adolescents, adults, couples and families work through their challenges in a relaxed and safe therapeutic environment, where you feel accepted and heard.

Have you been struggling to set healthy boundaries? Do you feel that you don't measure up or that you're just not enough? Has the distress from old traumas been triggered and re-triggered? Do you tend to see yourself in negative ways? Have you been thinking about making changes to the things in your life that aren't working, or that could work better?

Every day is exactly the same. Your alarm buzzes, you drag yourself out of bed, go to your unfulfilling job, come home, watch TV, and fall asleep. Rinse and repeat. You feel like you’re just going through the motions of life rather than actually living it. You want to shake things up – try something new and exciting. But you’re frightened. You’ve gotten used to this uneventful existence. Sure, it’s boring and monotonous, but at least it’s safe. And the longer you wait to make a change, the harder it becomes. You know that life is short, and you need to take advantage of it, but you simply don’t know how. You feel hopelessly stuck.

My passion for psychology comes from the true joy and fulfillment of connecting with others. Psychological change can be hard and take on many forms, but we will work toward cultivating self-compassion, psychological flexibility, and resiliency, as well as develop actionable skills to specifically target your concerns. I largely draw from principles of mindfulness, neuroscience, and cognitive-behavioral therapies (ACT, CBT, DBT) and tailor my interventions based on the latest research in the mental health field.

The journey to truly understanding ourselves can be a difficult and daunting task to navigate alone. In one moment, we may feel like the wind is in our sails, and without warning we may get caught up and trapped in the same familiar storms of shame, trauma, and pain. This can feel isolating and lonely, but you don’t have to be alone in life’s storms. As a therapist my aim is to help you reach self-acceptance, inner tranquility, and personal understanding to better endure and overcome any poor weather that life sends your way.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
