"Ease" is not a keyword for our "Bay Area"! My practice is a resource library for real lives. Whether you're highly visible, invisible, or both--you want some life change. You want a hands-on, motivated professional. Stress shouts out. Anxiety, Depression, Panic, Confusion, Conflict, Addictions/Compulsions come forth. You want strategies for sustained change. Or, you want short-term problem-solving for yourself, marriage, family, workteam. My approaches are eclectic, as we define your needs, goals, and choices. You're motivated to start; and I'm honored to be on your whole-person team!

I am a licensed bilingual, bicultural therapist who has been working in the mental health field for over 16 years. I enjoy working with the person who is ready to take that first step to make change. I support them by promoting a safe space in order to begin the therapeutic work. I normally work with individuals and families with multiple siblings. Recently I have been working with couples coming to address relationship challenges: intimacy and infidelity, finances, gambling and addictions, co-parenting and blended families, domestic violence and child abuse, as well as other relationship challenges.

So often we live in the grip of anxiety and depression. Our families pull out our worst, the realities of adulthood drain us, loss of loved ones or our own capacities become existential reality. Despite these challenges, we can always make changes in ourselves to increase our resilience and sense of fulfillment in life. Psychotherapy is serious work. While humor and levity in the present can help lighten difficult memories, we will dive deep into the past with expert attention to inform movement into a more complete future.

I believe everything has meaning, even pain. Oftentimes, the function of such suffering feels unclear or arbitrary. My approach to the work seeks to understand the motives and desires (both conscious and unconscious) that are maintaining painful patterns that feel hard to break. Through embarking on this journey together, it becomes easier to face uncomfortable truths that have stifled your growth in some way while gaining new tools for deeper fulfillment. I hope to provide an opportunity to increase insight while relating to yourself and others in a new way that allows for more authenticity, playfulness and connection in your life.

Isolation is hard. Being a Teen is hard. School pressure to perform well is high. Liking your body often seems impossible. Socializing has challenges. Past bullying can be traumatic. Do you want to learn knew coping skills? Do you need to heal from past events that are painful? Do you want to reduce your stress? Parenting a teen is hard, there is no manual and not as much parent contact as in elementary school. Getting enough self care as a parent can seem impossible but it is necessary, especially in the time of the COVID crisis. Telehealth is available!

I'm passionate about working with queer, neurodivergent folks who have experienced trauma. I also enjoy working with folks who identify as part of the “still COVIDing” community. I offer support around exploring gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, and coming out. I also enjoy supporting folks in developing secure attachment and healing past attachment wounds. A lot of the folks I work with are experiencing anxiety, depression, burnout, and stress. They are seeking a better understanding of themselves and some relief. I support them in bettering their relationships with themselves and others.

“Bridging is the work of opening the gate to the stranger, within and without.” – Gloria E. Anzaldúa. You’re at an inflection point. The ground has shifted; you find yourself on rocky terrain. The trail’s end is hazy, but you catch a glimpse: the outline of a hopeful future, somehow. Let us nurture those neglected pieces of yourself too oft ignored. With sincerity, compassion, and levity, I offer steady company on your voyage. You’ll discover bridges to yourself, your loved ones, and the goals that matter to you. The discourse shall be rich; the reflection, deep; the change, meaningful. You needn’t travel alone.

How you feel towards yourself can profoundly impact your relationships, work, school, and more. And a lot can make it hard to feel your best. You might be: Exhausted by a relentless self-critical voice...Considering your next steps to feel authentically aligned with your gender and sexuality...Struggling with boundaries and people-pleasing... Stressed and stuck in your closest relationships...Curious about non-monogamy but unsure where to start...Looking for nonjudgmental guidance navigating dynamics within polyamory and kink — not to mention managing all of this under capitalism. No wonder you'd like support!

Have you experienced abuse (e.g. physical, sexual, psychological, emotional, etc.) in the past and do the impacts of it seem to keep coming up in your relationships today? My name is Soy and I would like to help you find healing from your past. My approach to support you is through relationships--relationship with yourself, with others, and with me. I believe that relationships are at the core of our well-being and I will walk alongside you as we explore, challenge, and navigate strategies in your relationships that no longer serve you, and build on the ones that do, in an open, honest, and curious way.

Autism Therapists

What is the most effective treatment for autism?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has come to be considered the standard treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder, and research has confirmed its effectiveness for many children. Therapists trained in ABA techniques work with children (and their parents) on developing social skills, communication and learning abilities, and everyday habits of hygiene and grooming. The clinician will tailor their program to the child’s particular need but the overarching goal will be to help them advance as far as possible toward independence based on their level of symptoms and decrease the need for additional special services. Families should seek a mental health professional specifically trained in ABA, and holding special certification in the technique, who has extensive experience not only with the approach but in using it with children with the same level of symptoms as the child who needs care.

How does ABA work?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) sessions, which typically focus on positive reinforcement, can be intensive, lasting two or more hours several times a week, and continuing for two years or more. Therapists can also be expected to ask parents to take an active role in reinforcing lessons. Research has found that the technique can lead to major improvements that decrease the need for additional special services.

How does treatment for autism work?

Therapy sessions based on Applied Behavior Analysis will likely be frequent, intensive, and highly structured. After a thorough assessment, a therapist will help a child understand and develop skills in a range of areas, including communication, motor skills, social skills, self-care, play, and academic skills, as well as routines of daily living like hygiene. Typically, the therapist will help a child break down the components of a behavior—often referred to as the antecedent (what prompts an action), the behavior, and the consequence(what immediately follows)—and then reward the child at every step, while also asking parents to reinforce the lessons, and the rewards, throughout the day. This core therapy may be supplemented by occupational or speech therapy, and antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants may be prescribed to address specific severe symptoms.

How long does therapy for autism take?

Some people with autism spectrum disorder may be engaged in some level of therapy for many years, but research shows that treatment will be most effective if it is begun early and delivered intensively. When therapy begins by age 3, children tend to be better able to grasp and adopt the skills needed to manage everyday life, including attending school and establishing social relationships. This type of early-intervention treatment regimen is highly structured, typically involving 20 to 40 hours of one-on-one therapy per week, along with additional hours of engagement managed by parents, for a period of two years or more, although the duration of treatment is dependent on the child’s level of symptoms and pace of progress.
