Welcome! I am Amy Powers and hold a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). My approach to therapy is rooted in compassion, unconditional positive regard and authenticity. I have been practicing therapy for ten years, and my background includes a combination of private practice and non-profit sector treatment. Most of the therapeutic work I do comes from a trauma-focused lens, as I am an EMDR trained therapist and utilize different approaches to address underlying trauma. Additionally, I am seasoned in other traditional talk therapy, such as, CBT, Strengths-Based, and Psychoanalytic.

Anxiety may keep you worried, drained, and wide awake. Depression might fill you with sorrow, void you of purpose, and eclipse even the brightest moments. And traumatic memories may still be alive in you, wounding you deeply. Past events, transitions, and stressors might make this an even harder journey. You dream of being in the driver’s seat, taking control of the wheel, and feeling alive again. So you are here, sorting through profiles, looking for guidance. This is the first step to finding the relief, joy, and wholeness you crave. What’s next? Working together to overcome your struggles, gain skills, and ignite your growth.

My extensive work with trauma, grief, and loss has earned worldwide attention spanning across four decades. Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and International Certified Life Coach, I work with individuals, families, and groups to transform mental and emotional challenges into experiences of thriving health and well-being. My early career defining work began in the 80’s alongside John Bradshaw and focused on addiction, recovery, and codependency. Together with a team of cutting-edge psychotherapists, I developed groundbreaking techniques for understanding trauma: when it starts, how it affects the brain, and how to heal.

I work with adolescents and adults who have identified something in their lives that is causing distress or interfering with their goals. These may be uncomfortable thoughts or feelings, or stressful life circumstances both past or present. Or, they may have a more general discomfort, a sense that something just isn’t “right” and feeling “stuck.” Major life transitions, relationship changes, and illness may be catalysts for psychological distress. Regardless, there is usually a desire to understand themselves better, make meaning of their experiences, and to change grow.

With over 30 years experience, my approach is holistic integrating the connection between mind, body, heart and spirit. Certified in EMDR therapy by the EMDR International Association, I find EMDR to be a powerful tool that I use along with other treatment modalities to facilitate healing. I specialize in working with trauma, eating disorders, addiction recovery, grief, depression, anxiety and relationship issues. I especially work with clients who have trust and abandonment issues due to childhood trauma, neglect or abusive parents. Early dysfunctional family patterns and lack of nurturing can affect self-esteem, intimate relationships and work performance.

Life is sometimes unexpectedly difficult and suffering can be inevitable. However, how you respond to life circumstances can drastically change your ability to enjoy life. I have worked with those that believed in lies about themselves after a traumatic incident, childhood, or their own minds. These lies can be crippling and result in anxiety, depression, addictions, school related difficulties, stress, anger, parenting, communication difficulties, relational issues, family problems, job dissatisfaction and more. I provide different perspectives that encourage personal healing and relief. Change your mind change your life

My name is Erika Prigo; I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (139621). I believe that all people deserve nothing but the best quality of life that is possible. They should be allowed to complete their tasks every day with full ease and satisfaction. It is quite easy to take all of these tasks for granted, not taking into consideration existential problems that present themselves regardless of age. I use a combination of treatment modalities, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Existential Therapy, and Narrative Therapy, to find the best fit for you.

My clients come to therapy because there is something that prevents them from feeling satisfied and achieving their potential. It may be depression or anxiety. It may be some addiction (to alcohol or drugs, food, sex or internet). It may be that their relationships are stuck or they lack satisfying relationships. It may be that they are searching for a better sense of who they truly are. While my focus is to find the right approach for each client to bring about the changes they seek, with all clients I strive to create a safe and supportive relationship.

I have been in practice as a psychotherapist for over 7 years. My Master’s in Social Work focused on Critical Race Theory and Intersectionality and how our different life experiences shape and influence how we navigate our surroundings. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous Person of Color) & LGBTQIA, and a veteran of the United States Armed Forces, some of my approaches in helping my clients identify their challenges and barriers to their identified problems start from a person-centered approach by discovering who they are and what they need and want in life.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
