I work with Asian American individuals and couples around relationship issues. Most of my clients are thriving in their careers, but they want more. They want meaningful and deep connections. They want to be seen and accepted for who they are. But as Asians living in the US, being seen and understood is often complicated by cultural misunderstandings, holding conflicting values and identities, communication differences, prejudice and racism, intergenerational trauma, and immigration issues.

I am here to help clients who seek support for something that isn't working in their life in this moment. I find I am especially drawn to helping folks that consider themselves nervous, anxious, perfectionists and over-thinkers. Clients I work with are those that experience guilt, shame, or immense pressure in their daily lives; those whose inner voice may be critical and a bit too loud. They may have turned to the internet, voraciously googling for answers or they may have turned to substances that began in moderation and teetered into indulgent. Clients that come to work with me are looking for relief, clarity, and a quiet mind.

I'm a very experienced psychotherapist with over 30 years experience in many settings. I'm warm and compassionate, but also practical. I work from a growth model that helps you access your own wisdom and make a commitment to change. My background in the arts and Jungian psychology attunes me to the dreams and imagery that can inform you about your life course, but I also help you bring these dreams into action. My experience with mind/body can help you prepare for and recover from surgery, develop resilience, stress reduction, confront mortality and life changes, find meaningful work, and appreciate relationships.

Individual Somatic Psychotherapy: While I incorporate a variety of modalities into my work as a somatic psychotherapist, I tend to focus on present-moment states of being. This means that I pay close attention to what’s happening in the room, in your body, and between you and me, during our sessions. You may be curious and yet hesitant; hopeful and yet afraid. I help you embody the resilience you need to become the person you’ve always wanted to be.

Your potential is much greater than you even think. But psychological burdens -- such as depression, loneliness, guilt, and anxiety -- rob you of the freedom to feel, act, and choose. Self-protective strategies left over from childhood, ingrained but faulty ideas, and an absence of self-acceptance make life very, very difficult. How we work together will depend on what you want and what you need. Cognitive-behavioral techniques can be very valuable. But for many people, the path includes uncovering buried emotions, giving the "true self" a chance to emerge. Our closeness gives you courage.

I often treat younger adults in healthcare, tech/engineering, environmental sustainability, & LGBTQ+ folks who are navigating grief, depression, anxiety, relationship issues, & stress related to life transitions.
I love working with folks who are curious about the growth potential psychoanalytic psychotherapy can unveil. I believe in the curative elements of this approach and hope to generate positive change and wellness with you. Weaving a relational insight-oriented lens with art therapy, we can uncover areas of unconscious suffering, root causes, and establish goals for treatment. By increasing our self-understanding and meaning making capacities, we illuminate new perspectives and intentionality. Together, we can co-create effective pathways to integrate that knowledge towards personal growth and inner healing.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
