I feel honored to walk alongside my clients as they navigate their stuck relational spaces. Using a coaching modality, I partner with clients to create an action oriented plan to reach higher levels of thriving in their close relationships. This may include creating healthy conflict patterns, navigating challenging relational topics, or (un)learning attachment behaviors. I see my role as facilitating growth, where the locus of change resides completely in the client's control.

I work with couples experiencing conflict and disconnection & individuals suffering from anxiety, low self-esteem, depression, PTSD, anger, and difficult childhoods/pasts. I'm a "trauma-informed therapist" meaning there's awareness placed on the complex impact of certain experiences, often resulting in chronic suffering and overwhelm. Together we will work to understand what's contributing to your distress and develop a deeper connection to yourself and others.

Couples therapy is another powerful tool for transformation, because it offers us an opportunity to see these relational dynamics play out in real time and process them in the moment.
I view therapy as a collaborative endeavor to gain deeper self-understanding and address rigid patterns. It provides an opportunity to spend devoted time on yourself, examining the stories about who you are and planting seeds for something new. The therapeutic journey is filled with creativity, careful listening, and new perspectives that lead to greater insight and lasting change. My role is to create a nonjudgmental environment where you can explore your inner world. You are welcome to come as you are, and trust that my aim is to be curious, honest, and empathetic to your needs.

The body remembers what the mind would like to forget. We are hardwired to record trauma and adverse experiences in our nervous systems. This wiring is absolutely essential for our survival, but it can be interrupted if for some reason those natural responses of fight, flight, fawn, or freeze are not allowed to be fully completed. Essentially, our bodies don't know that we are safe even if our minds perceive otherwise. This can manifest as chronic illness, anxiety, depression. O.C.D. relational issues and a variety of other physical and psychological disorders.

I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation so we can chat and see if we are a good fit. Feeling unsupported along with lacking in confidence in your abilities can be heartbreaking. I've spent my career as a therapist helping children, adults, and couples deal with difficult emotions, relationships, and trauma. I practice trauma informed care even when trauma isn't the focus. In my office you will find radical acceptance, compassion, and a fellow traveler on your journey. I understand that starting therapy can be difficult, especially the first time, so I take the time to build a caring relationship. Therapy wont be sterile or rushed or cookie cutter. You can expect to reduce suffering, strengthen your authentic self, challenge beliefs, foster resiliency, and create more space for curiosity and compassion.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
