I help couples to change their relationship patterns so that they can feel heard, understood and loved by their partner once again. Couples usually come to me feeling intensely frustrated and stuck in reoccurring issues that, despite their best efforts, they are unable to work out. I help couples get to the heart of what is so difficult and then communicate in new ways that allow connection where there was previously only hurt, anger or distance.

I work with anyone who appeals to my skills with motivation to heal and move forward in their life! There are no specific conditions, although anxiety is a major foundation of so many disorders that I find treating anxiety, PTSD, and related depressive symptoms is the springboard to reduce symptoms of many other disorders.
Gail St.James, LMFT, is California's licensed marriage and family therapist. As a Humanistic Therapist, I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as the foundation of my practice, as well as Motivational Interviewing, allowing the client to take the lead in their own well-being. Although client history and traumatic events are important, I focus on the present, and moving forward in life, a positive approach to avoid centering on the past.

I know this feels like one of the lowest moments in your life. Maybe alcohol feels like your closest ally and no one understands. Perhaps the trauma of the past keeps haunting you or the communication between you and your loved ones is not working. You are doing the right thing by reaching out and the fact that you arrived here shows that there is hope ahead. We will find you comfort without the consequences of addiction. Your loved ones will hear you and understand you. A full nights sleep without nightmares is possible. You deserve to exhale and feel peace and security. You are not alone and I would be honored to guide you.

I have deep experience utilizing ACT, DBT, Trauma-Informed Care, and Mindfulness-Based treatments for anxiety, trauma recovery and depression.
As humans, it is natural to experience periods of intense difficulty, particularly when feeling overwhelmed by competing demands or relationship patterns that are no longer effective. Therapy can be a resource to help navigate healthy and authentic relationships, restore life balance, calm anxious thoughts, and regain overall wellbeing. I believe that we teach others how to treat us, and that setting effective and graceful boundaries is an attainable goal. When emotions become overpowering, our tendency is to avoid them, yet they provide important information that can be used to inform and move toward the life you want to live.

Thank you for your interest in my practice. We often need support as we try to make sense of this messy thing called life! I have a deep respect and appreciation for the many challenges associated with navigating a child's developmental journey, the joy and stress of parenting, finding balance within your relationship and unity as a family. When working with young children, I believe the most important person in your child’s life is YOU, and I aim to involve parents throughout the therapeutic process so you are able to continue to support your child at home.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
