One of the most important aspects in therapy is for patients to feel heard, respected, and understood. Given that each individual is unique, and no one issue is ever the same among different people, my approach is integrative and tailored to meet the needs of the person, not the "problem". I strive to create a compassionate, non-judgemental environment for patients to learn, grow, explore, challenge, and to live the life they want to be living. I specialize in working with adults - individual, couples, and family - with anxiety, depression, PTSD/trauma, relationship problems, substance abuse, ADD/ADHD, and LGBTQ issues.

I have an affinity for working with people who have suffered from childhood abuse. Many people who have experienced childhood abuse suffer from low-self esteem, depression, and anxiety. These conditions cause people to have difficulties connecting with others, maintaining a steady job or to have healthy families. Such individuals may experience workplace bullying or may feel chronically lonely. Other clientele that I enjoy working with have insecure attachment styles, are going through IVF or living in solitude not by choice.

It can be hard to make the decision to start therapy, and equally as hard to stick to it. This is one of the primary reasons I became a therapist, to help those who’ve struggled with conventional methods. My experience has had a big impact on how I’ve structured clinical practice, leading me to throw the proverbial couch out the window and go with a more direct, accountability-based approach. Whether you’re working on processing a negative self-image, relationship difficulty, career stressors, or other symptoms related to anxiety or depression, we’ll always be working to build mindfulness, purpose, and intention towards your goals.

What would your life look like with less anxiety, healthier relationships, more productivity, improved self-esteem and better personal effectiveness? I believe we are wired to want these things; but sometimes don’t have the tools to achieve them. We can’t change the past, but we can understand what is at the root of present-day challenges and move on from them. Additionally, I provide tools and effective communication strategies to help propel you forward toward your goals and dreams Clients sometimes say, “I wish I’d tried therapy a long time ago”. You are ready when you are ready. It’s never too late for positive self-growth!

I believe in self-actualization and I am an advocate for personal growth. Learning more about ourselves through the development of insight into our triggers and stressors can help us take our life back, especially when feeling out of control. Throughout my individual work with clients, I take an approach to therapy that is both patient and honest in nature. I like to describe my therapeutic style as empowering, open-minded, and warm. I challenge my clients in a respectful and safe environment, with client-identified goals leading the journey.

I am passionate about helping people to progress on their life journey toward wellbeing. I believe most of out distress and conflicts stem from maladaptive understanding of self and our perceived needs, of others, the world, and of God. Accordingly, a step toward health begins with increasing self awareness and insight into ourselves, our problems, and the ability to see the reality in growing clarity which result in changed thoughts, feelings and actions.

You may find yourself constantly doubting yourself, often asking others for their input about major life decisions. You may feel that others “have it all together” while feeling overwhelmed with your roles and responsibilities. You may worry about everyone else’s needs but feel empty when you’ve made sure everyone else is taken care of. If any of this is true for you, you’ve come to the right place. Therapy is a safe and supportive haven to remind you that YOU matter. Your desires, strengths, and needs deserve to be held and acknowledged.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
