I view therapy as a process that can facilitate healing and change, as well as understanding and fulfillment. Whether stuck in a conflicted relationship, feeling lost, struggling with depression or anxiety, adjusting to a transition or life change, feeling unable to break unhealthy patterns or resolve past issues and pain, it can be difficult to know where to start. Together, we can explore the issues you face and identify the direction you want your life to take and the steps needed to get you there. Once established, our relationship can provide the foundation and safety for this process.

Discovering your passions, managing change and navigating daily stressors can be difficult. It is particularly difficult, if you are experiencing stress at home or work, struggling with unhealthy behaviors or dealing with unexpected life events. I work collaboratively with clients to determine their treatment goals and explore barriers that prevent them from reaching them. My aim is to help you process change while offering strategies that increase coping skills and challenge behaviors that disrupt your progress.

I am a psychodynamic psychologist. As such, I believe that our early experiences shape our later expectations of ourselves and our relationships. I assist patients in examining patterns of thoughts, feelings and behaviors that may have begun early in life and continue to generate unhappiness with the goal of helping to relieve the depression and anxiety. As patients gain self-awareness and come to recognize and handle their feelings more adeptly, they often develop a more cohesive identity. While working to mitigate them, I am mindful of understanding what underlies the patient's vulnerability to developing these particular symptoms.

My ideal clients include women and teens struggling to navigate through anxiety during the transitions of their lives. They need the space to freely express their concerns, worries, and fears about their season of life while also having the desire to learn how to navigate through those seasons of life in a less stressful or intimidating manner. Other ideal clients include couples seeking to navigate conflict, who want to develop healthier ways to communicate their needs and wants to one another, and also want to be equipped with the tools to build or rebuild the foundations of their relationship.

My mantra is that therapy, good therapy, should create some sort of movement. Whether it’s helping you create actual, tangible change in your life or helping move along an internal conversation that you can’t seem to make progress in, my job is to help you get wherever you're trying to go.

Finding a place we can trust to tell our stories is essential to finding a path to healing, recovery, and transformation. Therefore, it is essential to find someone that can help you reach your potential to transform your life. We all are born with an innate capacity to develop happy and healthy lives. However, sometimes life experiences such as hurts and traumas can interfere with our development and we may become unhappy or unsatisfied with our lives and adopt self-defeating thinking and behavioral patterns.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
