Life presents each of us with challenges that sometimes seem overwhelming. Relationship conflicts, family and work stress, parental concerns, separation and divorce, health worries, the grief of loss, spiritual crises--all these hardships can bring anxiety, depression, anger and sadness in their wake. One can feel out of control using old coping mechanisms and strategies that don't work anymore. It's then that you will need the kind of support and guidance I offer to help strengthen your untapped natural ability to mindfully navigate through these and many other life stresses.

These include relationship problems, stress, anxiety, loss, low self-esteem, eating disorders, trauma, depression and pain.
I believe that the single most important component of the treatment process is the therapeutic relationship. It develops over time as a product of trust in the therapist and feeling like you have been heard. It is the vehicle by which change comes about and the connection of feelings with thought gets translated into action.

I most often work with patients experiencing depression, anxiety, trauma symptoms, domestic violence, grief, illness, substance abuse, adjustment difficulties, and relational difficulties.
Therapy is about what works for you. I provide a compassionate, non-judgmental, and confidential space to explore and shift away from maladaptive thoughts and patterns. I work relationally with individuals to foster self satisfaction, further self understanding and appreciation, and restore the self. A comfortable patient and therapist relationship is key to successful and meaningful therapy. I view the client as the expert on his or her own experience. I aim to create a safe space in order to expand awareness of that experience, integrate aspects that may have been excluded from awareness, and integrate new experience and meanings.

Life has many unexpected twists and turns. Although you are doing okay, you recognize that being just “okay” is not good enough anymore. Maybe you are suffering from some childhood wounds that need to be unpacked. Perhaps, you have experienced a bad break up, a recent divorce, job related stress, or anxiety caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Are you a teenager who feels no one understands you, a young adult trying to figure out your next steps in life, a parent in need of some extra support, or a couple at a crossroads in your relationship? Do you want to become the best version of yourself?

ie: pre-marital, separation/divorce, grief/loss, suicide, school concerns, reconnecting with your partner, challenging teen years and parental guidance.
When looking for a therapist it's important you find someone your feel comfortable with. Therapy can be a safe place to share and explore feelings or issues that challenge most of us at one time or another. I use a strength-based, family systems approach in helping individuals, couples, adolescents, children, and their families to reduce stress, improve communication and relationships. My goal with all clients is to build on existing strengths, and help find realistic solutions to problems and help achieve their goals. I empower them to achieve the changes they are looking for, in a safe comfortable and non judgmental environment.

I understand that life can be a difficult and trying journey. By receiving the appropriate help and skilled guidance we are better able to weather life's difficulties and gain understanding into our situations. This in turn will allow us to live better lives. My practice of psychotherapy is a broad brush which includes, but not limited to, trauma, addiction and gender issues. My work incorporates the use of EMDR, CBT, gestalt therapy, visualization and mindfulness training. As a psychotherapist, I am committed to my own growth. I feel this offers me continued insight not only within myself, but with my clients as well.

I have always gained great satisfaction from helping people feel happier and in learning more effective ways to achieve more fulfilling lives. Those clients who are eager and open to learning more about themselves in order to achieve these goals benefit most from my approach as a therapist. I often focus, therefore, on insight, meaning, and symbols (including dream interpretation)in order to help clients establish a more positive and accepting perspective of themselves and others. In therapy, I work with obstacles against achieving these goals that include anxiety, depression, addictions, anger, and interpersonal and relationship issues.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
