Life can be challenging as a man, husband, & father. My life experiences, both success & failures, are what I pull from the most to help my clients get where they need to be. I've been counseling in private practice for over 15 years. I've been married for 21 years; my wife and I have 3 children. I primarily work with men who are struggling in the areas of relationships, anger, anxiety, depression, career, and the like. I also love to work with couples who are struggling in the areas of trust, communication, intimacy, unresolved conflict, & unmet needs. It's a real joy to help my clients make genuine & lasting changes in their life.

First, I just want to say that taking the first step to find a therapist is incredible. This is an exciting moment. Contacting a counselor can sometimes be a little intimidating (I know from experience!) but I want to reassure you that it is the start to an amazing journey. As your counselor I will be there to support you as you overcome challenges, change harmful habits or behaviors, and heal from the past/present. I work to provide a positive, safe, and peaceful environment for my clients. I welcome humor, honesty, and authenticity as you move towards your unique goals.

With the start of a brand new year, many people begin to process and reflect on the past year(s) and prepare for a new one, thinking about the goals they want to set and how they want to be better. It is possible to not even know where to begin and to feel lost or hopeless in the process. We are all struggling, but we don't have to continue tolerating the struggle, and we certainly don't have to do it alone. Therapy can provide a wonderful and safe outlet to explore and process new thoughts and emotions and start making positive changes toward a better future.

My specialty is working with relationships; people having a hard time with relationships either romantic, at work or with a sibling, parent or friend. I teach effective communication, patience, and learning assertiveness rights (you have the right to say no to someone). I help my clients to identify their values, learn about mindfulness and describe what their "best life" looks like. If you are making decisions that are guided by your values, you will find your best life. I will help you identify ineffective patterns, find your path, set goals and get to where you want to be.

Counseling is the process of recognizing our pain and hurt (past and present), understanding the effects of that pain and hurt (as it relates to relationships, work, school, etc.), and making the necessary changes to stop the pain and hurt, and also promoting mental and emotional wellness. Psychologist Carl Jung once said, “I am not what happened to me, I am what I chose to become.” With that in mind, the hope and plan is to move towards one’s ideal, true self; moving from feeling stuck to feeling empowered.

Do you feel like life is happening “to” you or that you’re overwhelmed by your responsibilities and obligations? When you awaken in the morning, does it feel like a giant has its boot planted firmly against your chest? Maybe you even feel like you “have it all on paper” (a good job, quality relationships, etc.), yet struggle to find a sense of gratitude or contentment. A (im)perfect storm of constant technological intrusions, increased work-life imbalance, and social constraints due to the pandemic have left many feeling more disconnected than ever. So how can I help?

My counseling philosophy is based on listening closely and helping you work through some of the issues that may be holding you back. I always respect my clients' background and history that may be hard for anyone else to fully understand. Generally the answers to set you free are found within yourself. One of the great benefits of counseling is that, often times, my clients find tremendous freedom just by making insightful realizations with the help of someone with clinical knowledge. The most fulfilling days are those in which my clients report relief from distraction and newfound happiness.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
