I address substance abuse/use issues, the affect on the family, and I treat depression and anxiety symptoms.
I have been in the field of social work for twenty-two years providing psychotherapy for adolescents, adults, couples, and families. Counseling can be a difficult process in which vulnerabilities and pain are often exposed. I provide a safe, nurturing, non-judgmental environment making the client as comfortable as possible to explore this process and address concerns. My goal is to provide safe and healthy coping mechanisms as well as a clearer understanding of the issues presented.

"What do I do?" you ask. You're feeling uncertain, scared, alone, worried. Maybe you're a parent, and your child has faced something you never imagined would ever happen to your child. Perhaps it seems your family is falling apart: your marriage, your relationship with your children...You may wonder if there is any hope, any chance for your child to come back from this, your family to heal.

As faculty of the Bowen Center for the Study of the Family in Wash, DC, I research and teach about family patterns, like relationship triangles, anxiety, and how to take a well-boundaried "I-position" ("this is what I think; this is what I will do; this is what I won't do.
Has exhaustion and overload become normal? Do you spend your days chasing after the expectations and approval of others? Do you find yourself avoiding the hard conversations—or the hard decisions that you know would improve your life ten-fold? Maybe it’s time to rediscover your compass. Maybe it’s time to live the life you’ve been wanting. I work with leaders in families and organizations who want to develop greater emotional maturity (clarity + courage + skill) in challenging situations, and to realize more meaningful connection in the relationships that matter most.

Control-based parenting practices simply are not effective, particularly with children already suffering from broken, disrupted attachment, leaving the entire family system exhausted and overwhelmed.
If you are broken and in need of healing from abuse and trauma and/or are trying to parent a "child forgotten" you have come to the right place. Suffering through the aftermath of sexual abuse, domestic violence, emotional abuse, foster care and extreme neglect often makes it nearly impossible to trust others, which is a necessary starting point for healthy relationship formation. Built to Bond, Inc. is designed to enable you to make sense of your trauma and begin the healing process from a Christian perspective through the "Treat PTSD with PTSD to get PTSD" treatment modality.

I have been in professional psychological practice since 1979, been married many years, raised 2 children and shared in raising 3 step-children, so I have many years of clinical and personal experience on which to draw. However, I am always learning and growing, and enjoy sharing the journey of self-discovery with my clients/patients. I tailor my psychological treatment with individuals (adults, adolescents, and children), couples, and families to each person's unique situation. I utilize a variety of different treatment approaches, depending on the problems presented, ranging from cognitive-behavioral, insight, family systems, to supportive reality therapy.

Most people have difficulty navigating major changes at some stage of life. I treat individuals, couples and families with such developmental or adjustment difficulty or general mental health issues such as depression & anxiety. I offer counseling for marital and relationship issues either with the couple or one of the individuals if the other is resistant to couples therapy. Other frequently seen issues include dealing with loss of partner or friend or family member due to death or divorce, and the problems associated with work or school stress.

In addition to symptom reduction, therapy often focuses on (re)building meaningful relationships with family, friends, and important others.
Finding a therapist that is a good fit for you is pivotal to a beneficial and meaningful experience in therapy. A strong therapeutic relationship is the vehicle for change and the strongest predictor of treatment success. My international education encouraged me to adopt a flexible, curious, and inclusive perspective on the factors that contribute to one's identity and difficulties (e.g., religion, ethnicity, culture, gender, sexual orientation, etc.). I strive to create a safe and non-judgmental space to support clients' introspective journeys, exploration of identities, and understanding of the self, others, and the world.

Many people seek therapy because they want answers to their problems, for example, a diagnosis, a treatment plan, etc. It can be enormously helpful to have an understanding of one's problems and coping patterns. The initial phase of any treatment is to develop a clear understanding of the problem and possible interventions, including behavioral and lifestyle changes, etc. At the same time, change is rarely the product of finding a specific intervention, but is often the process of finding better questions. People grow and change through relationships; and psychotherapy is a special kind of relationship that facilitates this process.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
