As an EMDR certified clinician, I am intentionally and culturally sensitive to areas of grief and trauma, and the body's response to those experiences.
Are you overwhelmed with the pressure of being all the things, to all the people? Are you the strong one for everyone else, even though it feels like you're barely hanging on? Is your answer always "yes" even when your heart, body, and soul are saying "no"? Do you struggle to reconcile your faith with your mental health challenges? Do you crave a safe place that you can simply take the cape off and breathe? Does representation matter? If so, I've got you.

Welcome! I have immediate availability. The power of the individual to be aware; to know there are options and opportunities for transformation, led you here. You can live a more authentic life. Our relationship will provide a roadmap for you to navigate how you interact with yourself and others. I believe in the power of connection. You are looking for something different than the typical counseling experience, one that encompasses your whole self. You may have some experience, thoughts, or behaviors that you fear you will be judged, invalidated, or dismissed for experiencing. You are seeking a counseling experience that embraces the mind, body, and spirit in the process to support you in your growth.

The pressure to be the best mother for your children feels like it never ends. You are a mother that always wanted this dream to have children. However, being a survivor of sexual abuse always leaves you weary of where you drop off your children. School no longer feels safe. You want to stop feeling triggered by the constant demands of sibling rivalry, what's for dinner and how you never get a moment to yourself. You wish your anxiety would stop keeping you up late at night or waking you up in the middle of the night. You want to start healing from your past childhood wounds that are creeping into the present.

Life can be a wild time, sometimes. If you find yourself caught in the trap of overthinking, battling indecision, and wrestling with low mood or motivation, I'm here to help. Usually, you're a powerhouse—driven, self-motivated, and somewhat self-aware. Yet, there are those times when self-care takes a back seat, and you feel stuck in patterns that just won't budge.

Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
