Life can feel especially challenging if your journey has taken you on a path outside of the social norms. People who have experienced life in the military, those who deal with depression & anxiety, couples who are struggling in their relationships, and people of faith can often feel secluded. As a counselor I strive to normalize life experiences and assist in navigating the situations that my clients encounter. My goal is to provide a space for hope, strength, and growth.

I work solely with adults over the age of 35. It takes courage to engage in the psychotherapy process. I believe that therapy can have healing and growthful effects on peoples' lives and that emotional health significantly contributes to physical health and well-being. Facing stress, pain and trauma can be scary and I feel fortunate and honored to be able to work with people at difficult and painful times in their lives. I greatly respect the growth process that comes with the work of psychotherapy. I view the relationship between patient and psychologist as collaborative and largely driven by the expressed needs of the patient.

At times life brings challenging experiences that feel too large to overcome. The results are exhaustion and feeling lost from emotional upset with no solution in sight. Are you someone who is carrying the struggle of trauma, betrayal, conflicts in your relationship? Do you battle the struggles of out of control sex/porn behaviors, alcohol/drug issues, depression/anxiety? Know that you do not have to silently carry these burdens alone. Humans are resilient and the answers are within. You can prevail. I welcome you to a safe, non-judgmental place to begin your transformation, as you discover what lie's within you.

As human beings living in a broken world, we experience the weight of the complexities of our lives in various ways. Sometimes we don't even notice what our bodies are trying to tell us until it feels too late, when we feel overwhelmed and hopeless or so alone. Sometimes the anxiety can feel like it is dictating how we live our life. Or the ways we have tried to cope seem to be causing more trouble for us whether simply internally, relationally or in our ability to function in life. We all hold the stories of our circumstances, traumas and genetic makeup in our bodies, hearts and minds.

My practice is built upon the belief in the resilience of the human spirit. Humans are remarkably skilled at learning how to adapt to overwhelming stress. "Survival" necessitates a disconnect from our body, heart and mind. Allowing narratives to unfold, within a safe relational dyad, can invite a journey back to the Self within. While I have a special interest, and heart for, working with those who have been deeply hurt, I also welcome couples who are struggling to live in harmony with one another or those who want to rekindle a "passion" for living life together in real, authentic partnership.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
