Denise Abatemarco, Counselor in New York
“"Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom." (Viktor E. Frankl) For me, this is the goal of therapy- to create more space, mindfulness and room for growth in our daily lives. I work with you to attain this goal through gaining a deeper understanding of how past difficulties contribute to unhealthy patterns in current relationships and lifestyle choices so that you can begin living more authentically.

“WOMEN MULTI-TASK-- their brains are designed to and their lives demand it. But often women feel overwhelmed-- anxious, guilty, sure they have failed the people they love-- or themselves. MEN STILL WOULD RATHER THINK THAN FEEL-- although their lives now require they excel in both. They see that their "emotional intelligence" lags behind, and that they are stuck in bad habits in both love and work. BARBARA MAUTNER specializes in helping creative, intelligent New Yorkers dig out the roots of anxiety and depression-- and CHANGE the behavior patterns that limit their success and fulfillment

“Direct Neurofeedback® is an extremely low-strength electric current that is effective in reducing the symptoms of anxiety, depression, traumatic brain injury (TBI), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), addiction, attention deficit disorder (ADD/ADHD), insomnia, and chronic pain. Direct Neurofeedback sends a tiny, imperceptible signal to the brain that causes a slight fluctuation in brainwaves. This fluctuation allows the brain to reorganize itself and get out of frozen, stuck patterns, like re-booting a frozen computer. The percentage of patients that receive substantial benefit is upwards of 80%. Of those, the large majority experience initial improvement in the very first session. These initial improvements are temporary, lasting from a few hours to a few days. With further treatment the improvements endure. An average of about 20 sessions is needed. Treatment is not necessary on an ongoing basis. Although the conditions that improve have very different causes, there is one common denominator: they are stuck in dysfunctional patterns. HPN causes a "disruption" of that pattern regardless of origin, and allows the brain to either return to its "factory specifications" or begin creating new, healthy patterns. This coincides with the tremendous amount of research demonstrating a newly discovered "neuroplasticity" in the brain.

“So here you are, you have made the first step. It is important to find the right fit in a therapist, to see if therapy is the right fit for you, and if therapy is affordable. The first question generally asked of me these days is whether I accept insurance...a reality of our times. I accept: Blue Cross Blue Shield; United Healthcare; Oxford; and Aetna. And, how to find the right fit in a therapist? This may take a bit of looking.

“I use my training and experience to provide real guidance to people wishing to remove blocks to personal and professional fulfillment, develop a deeper understanding of themselves, and confront negative patterns of behavior. As a professor of clinical practice with individuals, families and groups at New York University, I teach my students to appreciate both the science and the art of psychotherapy. I believe that psychotherapy is most successful in an atmosphere of warmth, humor, and nonjudgmental support. As a psychotherapist, I try to create a professional atmosphere for playful exploration.

“It's sort of a good news/bad news scenario. Real change is absolutely possible; in my experience it happens more often than not. But it took you 20+ years to get to this point, so be honest: it's unlikely to be a quick fix. So...I work intensively and collaboratively with people to create what they need to get from "here" to "there." Many people I see are therapy veterans, underwhelmed by their past experience in therapy --finding it awkward, stagnant, even boring-- and are now interested in doing a more active, direct kind of work on themselves.

“I have been practicing supportive, insight oriented psychotherapy and psychoanalysis for 15 years. My education at IPTAR and my practical experience have led to my clinical approach which is grounded in the belief that therapy is a partnership. I work to build a trusting relationship that will enable the patient to experience aspects of one's inner life that are hidden away from conscious awareness. With guidance one becomes aware of the underlying sources of his or her difficulties. Inner awareness provides more relief from life's struggles than one can ever receive from homework assignments or advice from friends.
