When I decided to pursue a career as a therapist I did so because I wanted to make the world a better place, and decided to do that by helping one person at a time . My primary approach to mental health counseling is the Person -Centered approach . This means I believe that no one knows you better than you know yourself. It is my job to help you identify goals , improve communication , strengthen self-esteem and develop solutions and coping skills. During the counseling process you are in the driver's seat, I am just a GPS to help you on the road to better mental health. However, I'm not closed to other counseling approaches.

I am a clinical psychologist licensed in New Jersey, Ohio, Maryland, and Virginia. Over the past 20 years I have worked collaboratively with clients on a wide range of issues, and am comfortable utilizing a variety of techniques designed to help empower my clients and establish a greater sense of integrity within their lives. My training in psychotherapy has been influenced by a wide variety of philosophies and theories, and I am skilled in helping clients become more aware of deeper connections to their problems, whether it be in their relationships with others or in their relationship with themselves.

My practice is devoted to guiding individuals through a spectrum of difficulties. With an extensive background in treating both mental health and substance use disorders, I work from a unique perspective to help clients not only with addiction, but also with challenges such as anxiety, depression, low self-confidence, guilt, shame, and anger among many others. Additionally, I am experienced in treating process addictions like shopping, gaming, internet, exercise, as well as sex and love addictions.

Ms. Sara Bates is a Licensed Independent Social Worker with Supervision Designation trained in Trauma-Informed Care for All, Family Therapy, Perinatal Therapy, Sex-Positive Therapy, Pleasure Education and Intimacy Coaching, Couples Counseling, CBT, DBT, and IFS; treating both adolescents and adult populations.  Her clinical approach is to meet the clients where they are, by building on personal strengths and supporting them through life’s difficult challenges. She provides EAP services as a contractor, for local and federal law enforcement agencies. Reiki Master/Teacher certified, for stress relief practices and coping strategies.
