I use a holistic approach to treatment informed by a number of evidenced based, neuroscience, and trauma informed models of intervention including; Mindfulness based Self Compassion, Internal Family Systems, Attachment Theory, Experiential Therapy, and EMDR.
I use a strength based, collaborative, and mindful approach during treatment. I practice from a trauma and attachment based lens bringing mindfulness and curiosity into each session. For over 15 years, I have been successfully working with children, youth and families. Together we will explore past and current stressors and how these experiences have impacted habits and coping styles with an understanding that each of us adapts the best that we can to obstacles in life. We will look at areas in your life where you are feeling stuck and explore what you need to move forward.

You are most welcome to contact me to talk more about my process and what I can offer to help you and your family.
If you are wondering about how you or your child best learns and functions at home, school, work or friendships, then a neuropsychological evaluation may help you adjust the environment, processes, or relationships that are blocking optimal performance. Working together, we develop a set of questions to answer, for example, "How should my child be taught?" "Why do I have difficulty focusing on my work?" or "Why does my child melt down?" then, through interview, testing, and consulting, we can develop a deep understanding of mental, physical, and emotional strengths and weaknesses that can inform an effective treatment plan.

individual therapy--marriage/couples therapy --- professors, college and graduate students ---sexual abuse --- gay/lesbian/queer community -- family of origin issues -- mood problems--personality patterns/dysfunctions .
It's hard being a person. We all struggle to some extent in fundamental areas of human life-- relationships, identity, work, destructive behaviors, the meaning of life itself. Satisfying marriage/committed relationships are a specific challenge faced by many. I work in both individual and couples therapy. There are many ways to approach human problems, including: how family of origin influences personality; one's relationship to one's thoughts and feelings; self-defeating beliefs, both conscious and unconscious; self-defeating behavior. I value thoughtfulness and compassion, working together, and recognizing your goals and ideas.

I specialize in relationship issues, depression, anxiety, self-esteem issues, trauma, family conflicts, and grief.
I can be helpful to individuals who are wanting to understand themselves better and are invested in their personal growth. Sometimes people are aware of issues that keep showing up, but have been unable to work through them alone. Sometimes a crisis occurs that acts as a catalyst for seeking professional guidance. Often symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and insomnia interfere with enjoyment. Frequently relationships are not working well and support in resolving conflicts and communication skills can be crucial. I have over 30 years experience in helping individuals and couples grow and increase their happiness and well being.

I work with people on issues that include: stress, trauma, anxiety, adjustment, depression, anger, perfectionism, relationship issues, family-of-origin issues, family conflicts, multicultural issues, academic/profession-related issues, self-esteem, addiction, and parenting challenges.
Change is the only constant in life: we live in a complex, busy, and changing world that presents a variety of challenges, as well as opportunities, in our everyday lives. Our biological and psychological makeup, as well as our spiritual, cultural, social, and family backgrounds and support systems, have a lot to do with the ways we deal with these challenges.

My passion is addiction, working with the person struggling with addiction, the person in recovery, and the family members effected by this disease.
Unfortunately...Life is not fair. We may get knocked down by things out of our control, but it’s always our responsibility to get back up. Choosing therapy is a brave step in putting your pieces back together, a step towards freedom, happiness, and being the best you. My name is Sheri Leighton and I am a Licensed Master Clinical Social Worker (LMSW). I graduated from The University of Michigan School of Social Work Program in 2005.

My area of concentration is working with individuals and families through life challenges: family dynamics e.
Throughout life, it is possible to find ourselves on a journey we believe is impossible to complete. Through therapy, we learn that no journey is impossible; however sometimes we must detour...delay...revisit...or speed up! This analogy speaks to the true essence of therapy, helping others to navigate obstacles that present themselves along their journey. I will partner with you to find your path to a healthy existence despite any detours you encounter.

Relationships are central to my work, whether it be the relationship between a child or adult and myself, or the complex web of relationships within a family. My training and experience in Infant Mental Health--a type of therapy focusing on the attachment relationship between a primary caregiver and and an infant or young child--permeates all aspects of my work. I believe that therapy cannot separate an individual from the context of his or her relationships, past or present. I am creative and flexible in my approach to working with the children, teens, adults and families that I serve.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
