At many points in our lives each of us faces challenges that can require unique solutions. We thrive when we find balance in our daily life, therefore, I focus on helping people regain or find a new equilibrium. Often the first step is finding what is important to you.

I was the consulting therapist to the Northeastern Family Institute's Dialectical Behavior Therapy residential program for just under 8 years, the past year venturing out to expand my practice. I provide services to adults, specializing in treatment for individuals and families wrestling with the aftermath of trauma. I also serve first responders as an EAP First therapist, and I am a team member that conducts Critical Incident Stress Debriefing sessions to first responders. I believe in the potential for personal change. You are in a position of influence in your life and those who you care about and love.

I strongly believe that each of my clients is the expert on their own life and experiences -- while acknowledging that all of us have times where we can feel like anything but that! Whether you are seeking therapy out of a desire for self-care, self-improvement, or self-discovery, I would welcome the chance to work with you. My role is not to provide advice or to tell you how things are, but to aid you and support you in exploring your own mind and feelings as we work towards your goals. We cannot change the past, but we can find new ways to relate to it, and in doing so, shape our future into whatever we want it to be.

I have been working as a psychotherapist, counselor, clinical supervisor and consultant for over twenty years. My approach has become eclectic and energized by my interest in family systems, substance use, emotional well being, and the possibilities offered by an in depth approach to psychotherapy. My training as an Archetypal Pattern Analyst and in orientational approaches to dream work have consistently informed my work and my enjoyment of the psychotherapeutic and consulting process. The more I learn the more respect, empathy, joy and humor I have for the act of collaboration needed to find a fuller way of being in our lives.

I believe that the most healing, transformative therapeutic work occurs when there is an authentic relationship between therapist and client. I provide an environment which fundamentally supports a feeling of safety by witnessing you where you are with curiosity and without judgment. For many people, feeling safe also involves being able to set their own pace in therapy.

My primary client base consists of adolescents, young adults, families, and parents. I less frequently work directly with younger children. I find this work is best done as either parent-child work or parent support and training. For teens and young adults, I focus primarily on working with clients to develop strategies to manage the life events that they identify as interfering with important aspects of daily life. I use a strength and goal-based cognitive-behavioral framework to help develop concrete skills while providing a supportive and collaborative relationship with clients and families.

I have over 20 years experience helping people to find relief from anxiety and depression, reduce emotional reactivity, and resolve troublesome communication patterns. I work with individuals, families and adolescents. My approach to psychotherapy helps people attend to symptoms in the mind and body while increasing their ability to understand and communicate felt emotions. Somatic (body-based) techniques have been increasingly associated with more profound and timely results in therapeutic treatment. My work with clients brings focus to these three domains -- body, thought, and emotion -- in a supportive and compassionate way.

Through various techniques, my orientation is to help you access your spiritual essence, your true nature. Sourcing this essence will allow you to get in touch with the wounded parts of yourself with compassion and insight, rather than judgment and rejection. Seeing clearly with compassion into your habitual reactive patterns of thinking, feeling, and acting will expand your awareness and open you up to new possibilities of healing and living. The guiding question is: How can you more deeply and more tenderly embrace your human experience?

I firmly believe that all individuals truly strive towards becoming the best version of themselves. Some individuals need the support of others in the process of either defining or redefining themselves, their goals, and their life pathway.

I usually find that clients managing anxiety, depression, loss and/or addiction are first looking for a compassionate listener with the experience and knowledge that facilitates emerging inner strength. My approach is compassionate, non-judgmental and professional. Frequently my clients have issues with drugs or alcohol and I may work also with their partners, family, or concerned friends. I feel it is critical for everyone involved to know that they are not alone in their struggles, that support and guidance are available and that therapy has helped people feel better than they thought possible.

We each have an authentic self, and things we know to be deeply true about our hearts, minds, identities and lives. I believe that no matter how confused we may feel, we can all find our way back to what is unique, creative and courageous in ourselves. These are challenging times. There is nothing maladjusted about feeling anxious or depressed in a world that does not feel equitable or safe. My goal is not to help you adjust to broken things; it is to build upon the strengths of your identity, your values and your truth so that you can work towards the goals that are important to you.

Does insurance cover therapy, prescriptions and other behavioral health services?

In general, yes. Laws in the U.S. require insurers to cover essential behavioral health care at the same level as other health care services. Most health plans require a medical diagnosis and treatments that are evidence based and medically essential. This means that life coaching and alternative therapies are not covered, nor is therapy without a diagnosis. Call the number on the back or your insurance card or visit your insurance company's website to review your Summary of Benefits. If you have insurance through your employer, your Human Resources department may also be able to answer questions.

How much does therapy cost with insurance?

The cost of therapy depends on your region, how much training and experience your therapist has, and the type of treatment. The rate for talk therapy generally falls between $100 and $250. For a client seeing an in-network provider, the cost of therapy is often similar to the cost of other health care services. Clients pay co-pays and may need to satisfy a plan’s deductible before benefits kick in.

What is the difference between In-Network and Out-of-Network insurance coverage?

An in-network provider has contracted with an insurer to get paid directly for services, and to accept the insurer’s rate of compensation. Clients are responsible for deductibles and copays. If a therapist is out of network, that means that the client pays the therapist directly for services at the therapist’s regular fee. Out-of-Network providers often give clients a receipt so that they can file for partial reimbursement with their insurance company.

Is it difficult to find an In-Network therapist?

It is not unusual for therapists to limit the number of insurance patients in their practice, so it’s important to check in-network availability when you schedule your first appointment. In regions and times where therapy is in high demand it may take longer to get scheduled with an in-network therapist.

What is the difference between HMO and PPO insurance plans?

HMO health plans only cover in-network services, there is no reimbursement for out-of-network providers. PPO plans often cover both in- and out-of-network services, though the client may pay more for out-of-network services.

What is a Superbill?

A superbill is a receipt for therapy services. It provides all the information required by insurance companies to reimburse you for out-of-network services, including the diagnostic codes for your care, the amount paid, and the dates and duration of care.

Does insurance cover Online therapy?

Many therapists who shifted their practice to online therapy during the pandemic have kept that arrangement. And most insurers continue to cover telehealth services, with a few exceptions. Preventive care (such as an annual depression screening) is often required to be in-person to be covered, and some states require prescribers of controlled substances to see those patients in person.

Does insurance cover Group therapy?

Many insurance plans provide coverage for group therapy provided there is a medical diagnosis for group members, but there are some noteworthy exceptions. For example, Medicare does not always cover group therapy. Group therapy tends to cost less than individual therapy.

Does insurance cover Couples therapy?

Most insurance companies do not cover the cost of couples therapy because there is no medical diagnosis or medically necessary treatment. However, a few plans will offer a limited benefit, so it is still worth checking with your insurance company. Sometimes therapy is covered for a couple when one person has a diagnosis and another family member joins them for joint therapy, but it is considered therapy for the medical condition that includes a family member as a listener or helper, not couples counseling. Without insurance, most clients pay between $100-300 per 60-90 min session for couples therapy. Often clients can find classes or workshops that make it more affordable to work on their relationship. And some employers offer benefit plans that help defray the cost of couples therapy.
