Over the past 20 years I have learned that my clients come to therapy to be heard, understood, and to make sense of the complicated issues and relationships in their lives. People begin therapy for many reasons; feeling stuck, overwhelmed, confused or consumed with anxiety and depression. Couples come to therapy to improve their communication, to increase their co-parenting skills, or to enhance their emotional and physical intimacy. A good psychotherapy relationship can improve your feeling of well-being. It can be helpful during periods of transition and provide a safe place to explore past traumas or recent losses.

I have been in clinical private practice for 45 years, working with both couples and individuals.
Although conflict is inevitable in all intimate relationships, problems that continue to spiral out of control are not. The key to interrupting this painful cycle is learning to communicate constructively in ways that make it possible to manage conflict and get back to intimate connection. While couples are aware of the importance of communication, they are often unable to implement effective skills. The Intentional Dialogue, the cornerstone of Imago Therapy, provides the safety so that you can truly understand and be understood your partner.

My therapeutic style integrates approaches from several schools of thought. However, I tend to favor the client centered and relational approaches to therapy. I help my patients understand how their past and unconscious experiences shape who they are. This integrative style helps patients to effectively link their past, present, and future. I also value the healing power of relationships, which includes the relationship between patient and therapist. I am committed to a collaborative approach to therapy and I value the input of my patients about what they want out of treatment.

Each person's needs are assessed to develop an approach which is best suited to the individual. Collaboratively a treatment plan is created, building on strengths. In addition to traditional therapy, a holistic approach is available. Traditional therapy with listening, assessment, support, and presenting an objective view enables positive movement. Integrating many perspectives widens the opportunity for balanced change. Drawing on over twenty years of experience, I counsel adults, adolescents, couples, and provide family therapy.

I work with individuals and couples in a caring and compassionate environment to help them feel better about themselves and their relationships.
The uncertainty and polarization in the world today are intensifying many of our feelings of isolation, sadness, anxiety, and depression. Some people are experiencing stress levels that seem overwhelming at times. Would you like a safe place to talk through your feelings and learn new ways to cope?

I work with people in individual, couples and group therapy, depending on their particular problems and preferences.
Most often people come to therapy because they are experiencing some depression or anxiety related to their relationships, work, or sense of themselves. Despite this pain, making the decision to enter into therapy is often difficult. It takes great courage and a certain amount of hope. It is important to find a therapist with whom you think you will eventually be as open and honest as possible; someone who is non-judgmental, and who can both give and accept feedback. I will take the initial sessions to help us figure out if we can be good collaborators in this undertaking.

I have enjoyed working as a psychotherapist for 30+ years. I am a family systems oriented, psychodynamic clinician with a wide range of treatment approaches. I treat families and individuals experiencing transitions, loss and trauma, as well as depression, anxiety, behavioral or relationship problems. When I work with youth, parental involvement is requested. Treatment can be fluid to include siblings, parent/child and individual therapy. With all clients, the goals of acceptance, healing and growth occur within a positive and safe environment. I believe that feeling worthwhile and having hope are key elements to mental health.

I work collaboratively with each client-- Individually or in Couples-- to create an environment in which the healing process can take place.
"PEACE. It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still BE CALM IN YOUR HEART" (author unknown). Has childhood trauma, relationship difficulties, or life circumstances created emotional pain, physical pain, confusion, or self-doubt? Each of us has the capacity and potential to live a peaceful, fulfilling, and satisfying life. We can work together to make this growth possible. I have extensive experience in transforming patterns that cause depression, anxiety, distress, and disconnection from one's self and others.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
