Our lives are complicated and often stressful, necessitating juggling multiple roles, responsibilities and internal as well as external conflicts. Clients may be dealing with so many challenges, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia, binge-eating), relationship problems, career uncertainty, family conflicts. Whatever the issue, the important factor is the willingness to face it and bring energy to working on it. The work we do in psychotherapy is both nurturing and stretching and opens the door to the possibility of growth and change .

Through individual, group and family therapy services, you can work through challenges that have come with your chronic illness.
Whether you've been newly diagnosed or have been living with an illness for a while, you’ve been trying to push through to live the best you can. Every day is a battle because your body feels sick from aches, pains or other symptoms. You brace yourself for the worst to happen, because that’s unfortunately been your “new norm.” You miss being your old self - the one that could “do more things." Now, you feel like a failure in many areas of your life. The smile you wear covers what you really feel – alone, worried, helpless and angry. All of this has taken a toll on you emotionally and you want to feel more in control of your worries.

The key ingredients for a positive experience in therapy are having a counselor that is genuine, listens well, and provides support without judgment. I address many concerns but focus mainly on the following: toxic and stressful workplaces, stress, identity development and exploration, adjustment and major life transitions, work-life balance, family conflict, and racial trauma/racism.

Life today is difficult with all the demands placed on us by our family, work and our own need to achieve. Add to this the emotional stress of family conflict, divorce, defiant children, an illness or death in the family, and you begin to understand why more and more people are seeking the help of mental health professionals.

Over my forty-five year career I have worked with many different people of every race, age, and problem type. I listen with a supportive, trained ear, and help my clients find the best coping strategies that will enable them to be happier. Even if only one person is in my office, I see that person as part of their family system, and help them make positive changes that will increase good feelings and reduce conflict. Nearly everyone goes through a rough period in their life when psychotherapy could be helpful for getting back on track.

Presenting problems: can include but are not limited to healthy relationships, self esteem, confidence, self talk, suicidal ideation, breaking generational patterns, spiritual trauma, empowerment, motivation, racial justice, and family dynamics.
I am honored to be entrusted with your story and am excited to coauthor this journey with you. My name is Alyson Davis and I believe in the power of storytelling. It is my understanding that the most powerful story we tell ourselves is our personal narrative. I began practicing therapy in 2015 with the primary goal to support individuals with suicidal thoughts, intrusive ideas, hopelessness and despair. This support is rooted in the knowledge that life's storms are impermanent and have the option of either contributing to either our growth, or our destruction. We get to make that choice.

When an individual, marriage or family is in crisis, blaming the other or self is natural but impedes the ability to think about the problem clearly.
Please see my website, laurarbrooks.com for more information. My office setting and theoretical approach offer a calm environment to support your clearest thinking about the problem and possibilities for addressing it. I believe that thinking about the problem in the context of the relationship system contributes to more objectivity for moving forward in a sustainable way.

Whether as a couple, family, or individual, I aim to empower you with strategies for stress management, communication enhancement, and stronger relationships.
Have you experienced the heaviness of a chronic illness or the weight of being a caregiver? Are you feeling overwhelmed, anxious, isolated, or even depressed at times? Living with a chronic illness is an invisible battle that goes beyond physical symptoms. The emotional toll it takes on you, your partner, or caregiver is often overlooked but just as significant. Whether it's your relationship, career, or household responsibilities, chronic illness or being a caregiver can make it difficult to be the best version of yourself. It takes a lot of courage to take that first step, and I want to commend you for seeking support.

Relationships are the cornerstone of our lives. When our connection to others—and ourselves—is suffering, we in turn suffer. Perhaps you’ve been feeling out of step with your feelings and suspect that events from your past may be contributing to your difficulties relating to others currently. Maybe you've been feeling disconnected, stuck, or misunderstood in your marriage, and the loneliness is draining you. Maybe you have started to recognize that family dynamics from childhood have been impacting communication in your current relationships. No matter the context, you long for real and meaningful connection with the ones you love.

In person and telehealth sessions available! Are you STUCK in unhealthy relationships with yourself, your family, and maybe even your friends? Have you ever said to yourself “How did I get here again?” Do you have difficulty saying “no?” Unhealthy relationships can leave us heartbroken and unfulfilled. We spend countless amounts of energy trying to figure out where we went wrong all to no avail. We become sad, angry, jaded and defeated. Sometimes we give up on relationships all together. It hurts to much to stay and we are too afraid to change. We get STUCK between a rock and a hard place.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
