I integrate cultural relational therapy, structural family therapy, attachment therapy, and multicultural feminist therapy (among others) to creatively interrupt the cycles of suffering and misattunement, strengthen self-compassion, and inner-strength and consciousness.
Originally from Chile, I am a bilingual culturally-conscious and trauma-informed therapist helping individuals heal from intergenerational trauma, migratory and cultural issues, family dysfunction, sex and relational issues, and mood disorders. Whether this is your first time or not, if you’re here you’re taking an active step to dedicate time and invest in you and your wellbeing. That is AWESOME. I value the co-creation of a strong relationship that allows reconnection with your emotional self, all the intersections of your existence, and the life experiences that informed your view of self and the world.

I specialize in working with individuals and couples dealing with professional or family struggles, relationship discord, fears around intimacy and closeness, lack of motivation, perfectionism, self-defeating thoughts and behaviors, feelings of emptiness or isolation, trauma symptoms, loss and grief, and serious medical diagnoses.
Many people suffer under the weight of their sadness, fear, anger, and pain; others struggle to feel anything at all. Our self-esteem, relationships, or work can suffer as old cognitive, emotional, and behavioral paradigms are applied to new situations, often outside of our awareness. While it may seem daunting, exploring your thoughts, feelings, and experiences within the context of a safe therapeutic relationship can increase your access to, your awareness of, and your sense of control over your internal world. Through this process, you will find your strength, resilience, agency, and, ultimately, your freedom to more effectively shape your external world.

I also incorporate my knowledge gained from my own therapy and training, parenting three teenagers, my marriage, family history, workshop leader and author of "How to Manage Your Depression with Exercise" into our sessions.
Feeling heard -- with thoughtfulness and curiosity -- and being challenged, helps you develop insight and strategies for life changes. Patients tell me they appreciate the rewards of our collaborative process, and their lives show the benefits. Together, we will explore your life, deciphering your concerns and building upon your strengths. We will look at anxious, dark or self-critical thoughts that may be the source of problematic behaviors, and identify patterns and solutions. We will work together to help you achieve happiness and success. Of note, I was voted as one of the areas' best therapists in the Washingtonian Magazine.

My interests include working with clients through anxiety, depression, career stress, co-dependency, relationship and family difficulties, identity issues, burnout, life transitions, grief and loss.
I am a psychotherapist located in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, DC, offering individual, group, and couples therapy. I have a diverse practice and enjoy working with men and women to help them grow from within and improve the relationship they have with both themselves and others. Often, our sense of self is formed by our earliest relationships. In the therapeutic relationship, we can learn to cultivate a healthier, clearer sense of self. I create a warm, empathetic space where clients can learn to better understand themselves, let go of self-limiting beliefs, and build healthy coping mechanisms.

What's wrong with this relationship? The same problems keep on repeating time after time. So what does a study of psychology reveal? A well-trained and experienced psychotherapist can help to shine a light into the dark unconscious places which shroud the mysteries. This helps to bring the issues into consciousness, and once there, allows you to work with them. This work involves change. There may be many underlying issues including: mental states of anxiety and depression, an addiction, anger, lack of trust, various stressors, poor communication, extended family interferences, and more.

I have been working in community mental health and private practice since 2015. Clients who have found working with me helpful include trauma survivors, those suffering from symptoms related to mood and anxiety disorders, and those dealing with stress in romantic and family relationships. My therapy style has been influenced by my experience and training in mindfulness, emotion-focused, and acceptance-based models. I believe that for change and healing to occur, we have to get comfortable in the uncomfortable by accessing our true feelings and emotions.

I also have background in behavioral medicine, marriage and family therapy, and neuropsychological and psychological testing.
I am an empathic and experienced Cognitive-Behavioral (CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapist. I also teach at Georgetown Hospital and the George Washington University, as well as serve on the OCD Mid-Atlantic Affiliate Board. My treatment aims are as follows: 1) provide direct symptom relief, 2) engage clients in treatment in a way that interests them, 3) appeal to strengths, 4) encourage overall treatment compliance, and 5) explain the clinical process in easy to understand language. Empowerment occurs with the recognition that mental health symptoms have predictable patterns. Symptoms are relieved through changing these patterns. Interactive readings and assignments are encouraged.

I have been a teacher, supervisor and trainer of family therapists for over 25 years in addition to my private practice.
My approach to therapy is to create a context in which individuals, couples and families can know themselves in terms of their inherent strengths, competencies and capacities. I believe that when people experience themselves this way, they are most able to deal with stress, disruption, anxiety and depression in their lives. In my work with families and couples, I focus on interpersonal connection and work to help people experience the ways in which they make a positive difference to one another.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
