I have been in practice as a mental health professional for over 20 years, primarily working with a Mormon clientele around issues of relational health, faith transitions and journeys, and sexuality.
Are you, or is someone you love, facing a faith transition that is affecting your relationships and other areas of your life? Are you LGBT+ and looking for services that will support your journey? Do you have sexuality concerns or are you looking for a sex-positive perspective? Are you dealing with issues that require sexual healing?

I help Latter-day Saints who struggle with a kind of obsessive compulsive disorder called scrupulosity find peace in their spiritual lives. My clients want to have good experiences at church, in the temple, or on a mission, but their OCD and anxiety always gets in the way. They are worried that they aren’t worthy, that the Church isn’t true, and that they aren’t going to be with their families forever. They also struggle with other OCD themes in addition to scrupulosity.

I also specialize in recovery from coercive control, including high demand religions (especially the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints/LDS/Mormonism), narcissistic abuse, and cults, both religious & secular.
Have you tried traditional talk therapy and find yourself hitting a plateau? Are you experiencing trauma and PTSD due to a break-up, divorce, grief, sexual addiction, infidelity, love addiction, or sexual abuse and wonder if relief will ever be available to you? Perhaps you're curious if the growing field of psychedelic-assisted therapy could help you find the change you are seeking. If so, you've come to the right place. I specialize in helping people find the breakthroughs they desire through an eclectic approach, including trauma-based therapy, somatic parts work, and psychedelic assisted therapy (currently utilizing ketamine).

Queerness, faith transitions, religious trauma, and sex. I can (and do) talk about these topics all day. Any one of these issues can seem overwhelming and impossible to deal with. As a therapist who has dealt with these issues myself, I bring both professional and personal experience to help you move forward. I know every person's story and life is unique and I won't project my experiences on you. However, you won't have to explain the "Mormon lingo" or worry that I won't understand the unique issues queer individuals face in a heteronormative and cisgender world.

Hope is a powerful tool. Research has shown that progress and healing can be made when someone has it. Adversity, challenges, trauma, abuse, betrayal, abandonment, long-term illness, couple and family conflict, divorce, single-parenting, blending families, and grief can cause anyone to struggle. I have experienced these things and chose to further my education to know how to pay it forward to others seeking relief. Even the most extreme circumstances can be neutralized through therapy.

We are taking new clients at our office. We believe that therapy is a journey to build a better you. Whether that is moving through trauma, exploring and conquering anxiety, learning sports psychology tactics, raising your child (and dealing with the wonderful adolescent drama), fighting addiction, or strengthening your marriage, we're in this together. If you enter my therapy office, you are here to grow. While therapy is a process, it does not have to be a long, drawn out, difficult and treacherous.

Hi there! I’m so glad you’re here. I’m Heather, a Marriage and Family Therapist located in Bountiful, Utah. Working with couples, individuals, and families therapeutically has been a lifelong dream that came to fruition after starting a family of my own. Many of my skills as a therapist have been fine-tuned through years of lived experience and learning about the process of healing, recovering, and understanding myself through my own therapy… with a little bit of Ted Lasso & Bluey-isms mixed in! I would be honored to walk with you through whatever stage of life you’re in. You don’t need to navigate these uncharted waters alone.

Making the decision to look for help can be difficult and where do you start? With so many therapist being listed it's hard to decide which one to choose based on a simple profile and picture. That's why I offer a free initial consultation. Before you spend any of your hard earned money or waste your precious time you can decide if I can be of benefit to you and your particular challenge. And if I'm not the one? I will help you find someone who is for free.

I really enjoy working with people that want to improve their sexual relationship. This is a vital part of the human experience and is highly correlated with relationship and life satisfaction. Improving sexuality is different from person-to-person or couple-to-couple. My typical clientele has issues of sexual desire, arousal, orgasm, pain, satisfaction, desire discrepancies, or out-of-control sexual behavior/sexual addiction. Those that meet with me are typical people that are really in need of a specialist with a lot of education and experience in this highly unique field of therapy.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Therapists

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

Therapists and clients don’t need to share the same belief system or background to be able to work together effectively, but, especially for those whose concerns relate to their religion or cultural background, a therapist whose training includes a focus on cultural competence may be better able to form a therapeutic bond, even if they do not have an extensive history with or understanding of their client’s background before therapy begins.

Why is it important to find a therapist sensitive to Church of Christ/Latter Day Saints values?

Each individual brings a unique history and background to therapy, making it important to find a licensed therapist who is trained in a broad range of therapeutic modalities. In addition, for people who grow up in a faith tradition such as LDS that strongly influences the conduct of everyday life, finding a therapist who understands or shares that background can ease the disclosure of sensitive information and facilitate the therapeutic process.

Why might someone feel comfortable with an LDS-attuned therapist?

While qualifications and experience are always important, research has long established that a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic effectiveness. It is wise to find a therapist who is responsive to your questions and concerns and with whom you feel you can establish a rapport. A therapist who is sensitive to LDS values and beliefs and the role they play in the lives of Church members can offer Mormon clients a welcome sense of safety, assurance that their community and culture will be understood, and contribute to the bond between client and therapist, all of which support the therapeutic process.

How do I recognize a good LDS therapist?

LDS therapists are licensed mental health professionals—holding a master’s or doctoral degree in medicine, nursing, psychology, counseling, social work, or marriage and family therapy—who are also familiar with Mormon principles and values. They have an understanding of the culture and the important role the Church plays in the lives of individuals and families, which allows them to be especially sensitive to the kinds of emotional difficulties those raised in the faith can be prone to. Like all effective therapists, a good LDS therapist will have undergone training and certification in a variety of treatment modalities that help people through crises and enable them to master the challenges of everyday life.

Who is included in Psychology Today’s directory of Mormon/LDS therapists?

The directory of LDS therapists includes therapists who have shared their cultural background in their profiles. However, not all therapists choose to disclose this information; these individuals would not appear in search results for this reason. The directory also shows therapists who indicate that they have extensive experience working with LDS clients and/or communities, regardless of their own background or religious affiliation.
