We are moving out of challenging times and it's not a straight line for everyone. Many are rethinking who they are and what's important to them or still soothing elevated worry and fear. I help individuals still healing or having unrelated anxiety, sadness, stress, a desire for authenticity or those wanting to live their best lives but feeling stuck by experiences in the past. I also work with couples who want to strengthen their relationships, improve communication, work through resentment or a particular sticking point. I offer therapy primarily by video or phone and currently offer Thursdays at my office in downtown Larkspur.

Each of life's stages offer a unique set of challenges for us all. The struggles of being an adolescent, the emotional turmoil adults face when relationships or career are strained, the fears associated with parenting kids in a complicated world, controlling anger and rage at any age and the unique issues involved with the aging process. Whether life circumstances lead to anxiety, depression, fear and hopelessness or even a sense of curiosity and exploration, I am committed to providing a warm, nurturing space where we can work together towards a greater sense of growth and potential.

I can help you remove the obstacles getting in your way - negative thinking, low self-worth, lack of energy, anxiety, physical pain, being haunted by the past— and discover the joy of fully embodying your life.
Do you look at other people and think they have it all together? Or think that you will start tending to your needs once you are finished with school, in a new relationship, fit into your old clothes, or are not so overwhelmed with life? You get so caught up with the daily pressure of trying to do it all that your emotional, mental, and physical health suffers. Trying to live up to others’ expectations takes a heavy toll on your overall well-being. So you give in to thoughts and behaviors which you know aren’t healthy, causing you to spin into a shame cycle of not feeling like enough.

As a relational psychodynamic and Gestalt therapist, I work with adults and couples on issues like but not limited to childhood trauma and neglect, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, relationship problems, life transitions, and more.
I understand therapy to be a healing process rooted in our relationship; a therapeutic relationship built on authenticity, curiosity, empathy, deep attunement, and one without judgment. My initial goal is to help you become fully aware of your distress and understand it, and work with you to relieve it in the process. I believe that you have the innate ability to heal yourself and your relationships. So in the long-term, my goal is to help you access this innate ability.

I help folks dealing with stress, depression, anxiety, trauma, chronic health problems, and relationship issues of all kinds. My clients tend to be creative, philosophical, or intellectual people, and often (like myself) were raised in more than one culture. While what brings people to therapy is usually a stressful event or persistent problem, beyond just helping to relieve their suffering in the short term, my hope is that they discover through our work a lasting satisfaction that comes from taking the time to review their lives carefully and understand themselves more deeply.

Life can present us with challenges we're not prepared for. Underlying issues can make it difficult to cope resulting in difficult moods -- anger or irritability, overwhelm, depression or anxiety, sadness, grief. Other reasons for therapy include relationship troubles (e.g., romantic, family, friends), unresolved trauma, demanding life transitions, stubborn self-defeating patterns, and low self-esteem undermining your life. Psychotherapy can help you move proactively through these challenges with better outcomes and more confidence.

While your relational style helped you to navigate your childhood, you, like many people, may feel frustrated by painful life-long patterns of relating (to yourself and others) which seem to repeat. I empathize with this frustration and work with you to more deeply understand yourself so that you can enact real and lasting change. My extensive psychodynamic and Jungian training support this type of work.

We've all been there, disoriented by one of life's unexpected challenges, wishing for clarity...& maybe hiding from a bit of truth as well. Research shows we are out of connection 66% of the time; learning better tools for managing conflict is key. We'll use the Gottman Method to re-architect communication strategies that remove barriers to relational success, so clients access deep, meaningful gains, yet unrealized in relationships, ...or perhaps lost along the way. Wherever you are on your relationship journey, these skills optimize relational protections & potential.

I provide psychotherapy to people who would like to find healing, happiness and peace in the midst of life’s challenges. Critical elements of my approach are deep and persistent compassion, acceptance, collaboration and partnership. My goal is to help you develop strategies and coping skills, cultivate new attitudes and increase insight while all along holding space to honor your journey and inner strengths. This is done by exploring the functions behind emotions, thoughts, behaviors and beliefs, all of which are valid and important, but can be difficult to interpret in the chaos of everyday life.

I believe that people enter therapy with the desire to make their lives happier and more fulfilling, and a great deal of trust is invested in the client-therapist relationship. As such I strive to establish a safe and trusting environment in which change can take place. In my thirty plus years of practice in Marin County I have helped numerous clients understand and dispel deeply held negative beliefs and feelings that get in the way of them reaching desired goals. I bring considerable expertise to my practice, and receive positive feedback for my work with individual adults, couples and groups.

When it comes to our mental health and our relationships, often we believe that it is better to say nothing and go with the flow. That enduring through difficult times and biting the bullet is better than using our voices to disrupt the cycle of dysfunction around us. Using our voice can be incredibly difficult and at times feel so awkward because we have become used to suffocating our emotions. It is okay to have feelings. It is okay to want change. The true measure of strength is not our ability to endure dysfunction but having the courage to stand up and say, “It stops here.” I can help.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
