I work with clients ages six to eighteen and I help clients with emotional regulation, behavior problems, peer & family relationships, difficult transitions, anxiety & stress, self-harm, grief & loss, trauma, and crisis work.
Sometimes it’s hard for your child or teenager to open up to you. Under the surface, they may be struggling more than it appears. Or their outbursts make it apparent that something is not right. It takes courage to acknowledge that your child is struggling and that you are not able to resolve their issues on your own. It takes even more courage to reach out for help. I can help your child or teenager through traditional talk therapy or play therapy, using a person-centered approach to find and give help for any assessed needs. It takes a village to raise a child, so let me help you with yours.

Working together to harness your capacity for self-healing, we will look to the roots of emotional pain to soothe the effects of trauma.
You’re exhausted, and it’s time to find rest and peace. You may be feeling anxious, angry, overwhelmed, or alone. You desire connection in close relationships, but intense feelings often create division. You feel stressed or triggered at times, and you’re not sure why. Quiet peacefulness is what you long for—calm, steady relationships that heal instead of hurt.

Do you feel unsure of who you are now? Perhaps you are going through a transition in your life and trying to understand how to get along. Maybe you feel like you aren’t yourself because of intense, persistent feelings of some kind. Maybe your past is dragging you down. Maybe your relationships at home, work, or in your community are not as satisfying as you wish they could be. You’re starting to think, you need an outside perspective; It’s hard to sort through this alone. These thoughts have got you asking, “Will psychotherapy help? Can it really change things? Is it worth it?”

Jennifer Betts said, "While some climb mountains, others are carrying them." You are struggling, in pain, suffering & yet don't feel like you can find a way out or forward. Perhaps you've lost someone or something that was important to you. Maybe the weight of traumas, physical or emotional wounds, betrayals, or feelings of inadequacy & worthlessness are pulling you under despite all your efforts to be strong & hold on. You may not even be able to pinpoint what exactly you are feeling or why because everything is so jumbled and intertwined that sorting it out feels like a Herculean task. And, sometimes, life is just really hard.

Living comes with its fair share of stressors, and yet, your situation is unique to you. Do you need a chance to regroup, sort through ideas, and move through a rough spot? Perhaps you haven't quite felt yourself, and you want to get back to you. Maybe you and someone significant have been experiencing conflict, and you would like a neutral party to help work through the complicated reactions that have resulted and come to a clear resolution. If you find yourself in one of these scenarios, I would gladly offer perspective and a listening ear.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
