I enjoy getting to know my clients from the very beginning, in order to focus our counseling work on what best fits each person, family, or couple. I believe in establishing a strong, flexible, and collaborative therapeutic relationship as the foundation for positive work with clients. I am comfortable working with clients through a variety of issues, including depression, anxiety, grief, relationship and/or family counseling, self-confidence and identity struggles, life transitions, feeling "stuck" in life, and much more. I am also open to including topics of spirituality in our counseling work, for any clients who are interested.

I provide individual and family therapy to help get there.
Teens and young adults are experiencing depression and anxiety at higher rates in recent years. Declining grades, changes in sleep patterns, angry outbursts or isolation from friends and family are signs that help may be needed. Plus, the presence of social media has complicated matters. Teens as well as college students and young adults are experiencing stressors that families may not understand or have the skills to manage. I help people who are struggling with emotional and behavioral difficulties find ways to cope with problems and reach their full potential.

The transitions we experience as we try to grow a family can be laden with anxiety, grief, depression, and overwhelm. Are you having difficulty conceiving? Is pregnancy or parenthood not how you envisioned it would be? Are you experiencing sadness, worries, doubts and negative thoughts, struggling to connect with your loved ones, or just not feeling like yourself? You are not alone. Therapy can help anyone who wants to process their thoughts and feelings without shame and judgement, come to a place of self-acceptance, increase self-awareness, and live life more mindfully.

I became a therapist because I believe people can do hard things, especially with the right support alongside them. I work with children, teens, and young adults who deserve for someone to meet them where they are at, and empower them to make positive change. I also believe therapy for children and teens is best done with the whole child and whole family in mind, and can provide family sessions as needed.

Previous to my current position as Professor of Social Work at Saginaw Valley State University, I worked as a family preservationist, a child/adolescent therapist, and a substance abuse counselor.
My work as a therapist is finding the treasure that I know is inside of you. I realize that your “gem” is often there, but covered up by years of bad habits, unfortunate events, or mental health issues beyond your control. I believe that you have your own answers to your problems and I am here to help you clarify and find those answers. I take a person-centered approach. I may challenge you, but do so with compassion and understanding that life is a journey with bumps in the road for all of us.

I am passionate about helping those with relationship issues, depression and anxiety, identity issues, life transitions, divorce recovery and remarriage, blended family issues, and trauma.
What is holding you back from living the life you want? Perhaps you keep having the same arguments over and over with your partner, can't stop that critical voice in your head, are troubled by your responses to others, or are bogged down with feelings of depression or anxiety. Whatever it is, you want to understand it and move on. My aim is to help you clarify your goals, discover the root causes of your feelings and symptoms, help you find awareness of faulty beliefs, and create a plan for change in a warm and caring environment.

Personal specialties include Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Client-Centered, Internal Family Systems, and Solution Focused approaches.
Hi, my name is Natalie! My passion in the field lies with childhood traumatic experiences and how these take a physical toll on our bodies. Trauma can place heavy burden on the unconscious parts of our mind and manifest as physical sensations, certain thought patterns/habits, and self-fulfilling prophecies. In this way, it is important to call attention to these details of our lives, as they make profound differences in personal mental health. They also have a cyclical relationship with those in disadvantaged populations, leading to over-incarceration; medical neglect; stereotyping, prejudice, discrimination; etc.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
