I do not focus solely on the symptoms of anxiety, depression and interpersonal conflict but also on the issues underlying them.
Whether you are entering therapy with a clear vision of what you are looking for or are more uncertain of your goals, I will work with you to come up with strategies for growth and the development of optimal emotional health and functioning. I believe that healing occurs through the process of building a trusting therapeutic relationship. By creating a safe and confidential environment I will help you to better understand patterns (which are often outside of your awareness) that lead to emotional distress. Recognition of these patterns empowers you to make choices that can lead to life long change.

I have experience working with a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, LGBTQ issues, relationship difficulties and ADHD.
Have you been feeling down? Like something is off? Are you at a transition point in your life? Are you struggling with a relationship? You've made it this far, why not give counseling a try? For many people it is the first step in changing behaviors and patterns that have led to distress and relational challenges. Together, we’ll explore what might be getting in your way, and identify strategies that you can use to feel better. Therapy can also be a great opportunity to explore questions related to meaning and purpose in life and in work, as well as personal and professional identity development.

Our work has focused on a variety of topics from relationship issues, to anxiety, depression, and PTSD.
I enjoy working with individuals, couples, and families with all types of relationship and mental health issues. All of us bring positive and negative aspects of ourselves into our relationships and our work. I often find that people get stuck using behaviors or having expectations that may have worked well in past situations, such as childhood or previous relationships, but do not work well in their current situation. Often the goal in therapy is to identify what is and what is not working, and then build healthy and effective thoughts and behaviors.

I have practiced psychotherapy for 20+ years. I strongly believe it is possible to feel energetic, satisfied with our achievements, secure in relationships, and positive about the future. At times we can feel overwhelmed and discouraged, grieving losses. If you deal with anxiety, depression, stress - you may feel vulnerable instead of resilient, focused on past trauma experiences/regrets, on fears for the future. I provide guidance as you explore and change habits of thought and behaviors to improve relationships, to access natural resilience, to achieve a greater sense of personal security and self-confidence.

You deserve to live the life that you want, however, this may difficult sometimes. Feelings of depression, anxiety and PTSD may be the result of past trauma, hurt and other unforeseen circumstances. Because of those experiences, the thought of seeking assistance (therapy) scary and overwhelming. I know exactly how you might be feeling, the fear of being judged, shamed or misunderstood can be frightening.

My goal is to provide empathetic, creative problem-solving, and dynamic counsel to those who find themselves both stressed and depressed by the circumstances of the life they are living -- both alone and in relationship with others. This is not about "mental illness" or behavioral change alone. This is about providing a caring, non-judgmental and trained ear to those in need of someone to hear them, offer a new perspective of looking at things and creating new proactive approaches to life's problems. This is for those who may be apprehensive about therapy, but need to converse with a non-judgmental, objective listener.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
