Viktor Frankl once said "He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how". Frankl was actually quoting Nietzsche while trying to survive his own devastating experiences. However, it leads to the question... "what is YOUR why?". If you are struggling to answer that question, while simultaneously struggling with symptoms of anxiety, depression, PTSD, or substance abuse issues, then you have come to the right place. Let's find your 'why' together.

These problems include, substance abuse, anxiety, depression as well as emotional and developmental problems related to economic and relationship hardship.
C.G. Jung stated, "In many cases in therapy the patient who has come to us has a story that is not told, and which as a rule no one knows of. To my mind, therapy only really begins after the investigation of that wholly personal story. It is the patient's secret, the rock against which s/he is shattered." My practice involves creating a client/therapist relationship and environment where this wholly personal story can be explored and brought to consciousness. I work to create a safe, accepting, nonjudgmental, and collaborative space that will bring wholeness and meaning to the suffering that every human experiences.

Over the course of my career, I have learned ways to uniquely connect with individuals across the lifespan. Working with families, adults, and adolescents, has allowed for the curation of best practice approaches that resonate with the individuals who shared their experiences with me. With motivation and support individuals are encouraged to explore their narratives, challenge self-limiting beliefs, and embrace positive change, thereby embarking on a path to improved mental health and if applicable lasting recovery from addiction.

A clinical psychologist with a Judeo-Christian spiritual base and postdoctoral training in the fields of individual and marital therapy, addiction, psychopharmacology, forensic psychology, and neuropsychology. My philosophy is this: Respect for the individual is the upper most concern because inside each of us is someone who deserves to live his or her life with dignity, joy and positive self regard. Therapy is that process of self-revelation and healing whereby each person shares of themselves in the hope that their doctor will walk with them and teach them how they might live a life of greater peace and happiness.

I have experience working with individuals suffering from anxiety, depression, addiction, and trauma.
Who would you be without the burdens you carry? Whether you are struggling through a crisis, experiencing a loss, or dealing with anxiety, depression, or addiction, you don't have to fight through it alone. Life events often create mental and emotional blocks that keep you feeling stuck. Together we will identify issues, dysfunctional patterns of behavior, maladaptive coping mechanisms, and other barriers that are preventing you from being where you want to be. We will start with where you are right now and build on your strengths so you can begin or resume living the life you want.

Life's struggles can cause confusion, discomfort, and unhappiness in our life. Issues that are troubling can lead to substance use, increased stress, and or other unsettling thoughts/behaviors often resulting in unpleasant actions or regrettable decisions. It has been stated, "a wise man [person] seeks counsel", and truly a person who recognizes the benefits of counseling demonstrates action toward a healthier lifestyle and positive mental health. Regardless of the reasons why, it is important to feel empowered to overcome them and effectively cope with them in a more effective, healthier way.

I have had extensive experience working with both men and women dealing with issues related to addiction and codependency.
I have studied extensively in the area of addictions, women's issues, Jungian Psychology, and Bowen Family Therapy. I utilize all of these ideas in my work, depending on the type of client I am working with. My approach is Rogerian, providing a safe and supportive environment, but not at the expense of my client's growth. I believe therapy is about becoming the actualized individual you were meant to be.

My ideal clients are facing challenges in relationships, emotional regulation and behavioral addiction. I have 12 years experience in counseling and have been in private practice for 3 years. I offer a warm and supportive (virtual) environment where clients feel heard and understood. Together we explore interactions in relationships, old personal narratives and develop skillful practices and responses. We discover childhood connections, "parts" and faulty feedback loops, all while aimed at the goal of integration into a more accepting state of being. My approach is experiential, DBT supported and IFS/Attachment informed.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
