I have extensive experience working with adolescents and adults who experience trauma, depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, self-harm, the foster care system, and many other issues.
Hello! The decision to begin therapy is a courageous and self-nourishing one. It's challenging to take that step back and take inventory of your life and your role in it. Therapy is a place where you can truly do exactly that in a non-judgmental, empathy driven space. We will reflect on what may need to change, and process through those feelings as a team. Together, we will work on understanding emotions, thoughts, and behaviors and how they work together, effective ways to label and express your feelings, and learn coping strategies to use in your everyday life.

My focus as a therapist is helping you understand and embrace your own identity and your own values. There is powerful strength in being yourself, and we can discover that strength together. My expertise is particularly in working with body image and eating disorders, with people who have or wish to be evaluated for autism and/or ADHD, with people experiencing self-injury or suicidal ideation, and with people who have "treatment-resistant" or severe anxiety and depression. I partner with patients who want to understand themselves on a deep level, while simultaneously offering concrete skills and tools to alleviate current symptoms.

I have aided these individuals in working through suicidal ideation, self-harm, depression, anxiety and trauma.
Your life is an ongoing journey and it's time to make yourself a priority. Are you not living the life you dreamed of? Or do you often feel frustrated that your relationships, home life, and career are less than satisfying? Have you ever wondered what is stopping you from feeling happier, more confident, and in control of your future? We live in a society so busy that we can barely hear ourselves think. Its rare that anyone feels truly heard and listened to. I can help you to learn to lead a more authentic, self-actualizing life that works for you. Perhaps you're looking to take steps towards healing, but are unsure where to start.

Our mental health practice includes online psychiatry, mental health therapy, and care for patients who have suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
I believe that physical and emotional health are closely connected — so striving for mental wellness is a mind, body, and spiritual process. Attending to one’s emotional health is just as important as seeing a medical doctor. I want to help patients feel better, meet their goals, and have a better quality of life.

Hi, I’m Yitzchok Wagshul. One day, my young grandson asked me what kind of doctor I am. I’m a clinical psychologist, so I replied, “I’m the kind of doctor who helps sad people feel happy.” He looked at me and said, “Zaidy,” (that’s “Grandpa” in Yiddish) "that’s not being a doctor, that’s just being nice!” That’s a cute story, but I want to tell you something: the better part of therapy is “being nice.” I know a lot of psychology. But if I didn’t respect each person I work with, if I didn’t view them with complete acceptance and unconditional positive regard, all of that would be worthless, because no one would listen to me.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
