I have experience treating anxiety, OCD, relationship concerns, low self-esteem/self-efficacy, perfectionism, and more.
Reaching out for counseling can be scary or intimidating. It can also be challenging to find the right "fit" with a therapist. I hope to offer a place where clients can feel seen, heard, and appreciated. Seeking counseling can help you make sense of your past, present, and your future. If you are feeling down, anxious, lost, or just off and your current coping skills aren't working, starting therapy might be a good next step.

If you or your child are suffering from an OCD or an anxiety disorder you are not alone. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness and yet most sufferers do not have access effective treatment. The good news is that if you or your loved one is troubled with unwanted thoughts or worries, physical symptoms due to anxiety, perfectionism, phobias, health fears, or any other anxiety there is help. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and more specifically exposure therapy has repeatedly shown to be the most effective approach for defeating anxiety and OCD.

Anxiety, depression, and obsessive compulsive disorder are a few of the most common problems that I see on a regular basis. The thing that all of these people have in common is that they want to get better and to live their lives with fewer struggles. According to the CDC 1 in 5 Americans will suffer from a mental illness this year. Life is hard and too many people are suffering in silence. People need an experienced therapist to help them along their journey to recovery. The International OCD Foundation states that on average someone suffering from OCD takes 17 years to receive the proper diagnosis and treatment.

I have dedicated all my academic and professional life to the study and treatment of anxiety and OCD-related disorders. Anxiety is very common, and many general therapists do an excellent job treating it. As a specialist, I tend to work with people who experience severe OCD and anxiety symptoms, have participated in residential or intensive programs (IOP, PHP), or have seen a number of therapists in the past, but have been unable to make progress. It is common for people with OCD and severe anxiety to also struggle with depression, relationship problems, etc. I can usually help people make progress in those areas, too!

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
