Clinically I have dealt with a wide range of mental health concerns: personal/generational trauma, stress, anxiety, depression, interpersonal issues and grief.
I view therapy as a partnership designed to disentangle life’s complexities on the pathway to wholeness. For many clients this involves struggles with issues from their past, making sense of their emotions or dealing with one of life's many transitions. Others are in need of support around grief or working through relationship issues. My training as a former Diversity, Equity and Inclusion professional has taught me to view my clients through a multicultural lens that acknowledges and values all parts of their identity. As partners we will create adaptive coping strategies to bring clients into better alignment and fulfillment.

Popular wisdom suggests that adversity and trauma reveal our inner strength and build character. But sometimes we need help: someone to help us make meaning of those life experiences that changed our outlook, damaged our relationships, and left us questioning ourselves; someone to help us unlock our inner resilience and build new ways of coping. I specialize in treating adults adjusting to adversity, recovering from trauma, and dealing with life stressors.

In my practice I work with clients of all backgrounds and age groups; and I have a specialty in adolescence and young adulthood. I enjoy supporting clients as they navigate growing up and becoming adults in this complex world. My approach is grounded in Psychodynamic Theory and the belief that many of our problems are rooted in thinking patterns, behaviors, and emotional responses that we developed early in life. My work is eclectic and collaborative. I draw on many modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Trauma Informed Treatment, Family Systems Theory and Motivational Interviewing.

Sometimes life's challenges, transitions, or conditions are more than we can handle. Feelings of sadness or fear overwhelm. We realize that the way we are living is not how we want to live but are unable to make changes on our own. Unhealthy relationships, dealing with disappointment or loss, feeling alone, or struggling with an inner critic, are a few examples of what leads people to reach out to me. In my practice I largely employ the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model as my framework but also draw techniques from CBT, EMDR, DBT, mindfulness, somatic experiencing, and psychodynamic psychotherapy, when needed.

People who feel anxious, depressed or just lonely make major improvements in their lives, careers and relationships, working with me to understand the issues which cause their distress. Working with depressive disorder, anxiety, relationship problems, career problems, and substance abuse my services include individual psychotherapy, group and couples work. As a licensed psychotherapist, I received my MSW from Columbia University and received analytic training at Washington Square Institute and The Center for the Advancement of Group Analytic Studies. Prior to becoming a psychotherapist I had a career as a Marketing Executive which makes me well qualified to work with professionals struggling with career advancement issues.

One of my favorite quotes is “Self-care is how you take your power back.” Making this important decision to seek counseling is the first step to taking your power back, and I would be happy to be a part of your journey! My name is Sherica Ross-Nickle, and I am an MHC-LP Psychotherapist at Center Rock Mental Health Counseling. I have grown to understand how important it is to find a provider that you can confide in, someone you can trust, and someone who can support your well-being. If you are currently experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, or trauma, I can provide the support and guidance that you need.

During these challenging times, I am meeting clients on Zoom, Facetime, and phone. I have over thirty years of experience working with clients with Eating Disorders, trauma and neglect. I have presented at National Conferences on my original theory of the impact of emotional and physical neglect on peoples lives. I have broadened my work in recent years to include, life transitions, and dealing with the real and also perceived cultural biases of aging and self actualization.

With over 20 years of post-graduate experience, I have a broad and varied background which enables me to uniquely help children, adolescents, parents, and adults. I worked in foster care and adoption before beginning a career in school social work. While working in this field, counseling children of all ages with a variety of needs and challenges, I noticed that staff members would come to my office frequently and that these visits turned into counseling sessions. While I continue to enjoy working with children, it has been a pleasure expanding my practice into supporting adults as well.

I like working with people who want to know themselves better and are open to looking at their lives in a way they may not have done before. Most people seek psychological help because they want relief from pain and to feel more satisfied in their relationships, work, and with themselves. However, when they engage in examining their lives, things can take surprising turns that not only helps them achieve their goals but often results in redefining what they want in life.

There’s nothing I find more gratifying than helping my clients redefining purpose in their lives. While we are in a constant struggle with the expectations of others, we often lose sight of who we are ourselves. We negotiate, toil, and sacrifice—sometimes without even knowing why.

I have extensive experience and specialized training in trauma, eating disorders, addictions, couples, women's issues and parenting.
Good therapy can produce long lasting life changes. Although shifts in behavior and emotions can take time, even in the short term there can be immediate relief. I see the relationship between the patient and therapist as central to a positive outcome. Although we are all infinitely diverse and complex, collectively we seek to be understood. I listen with curiosity and empathy to understand each individual's unique experience. In treatment I create an atmosphere of trust where together we can identify your strengths, find practical solutions to problems and unfold underlying vulnerabilities that are obstacles to your experience of a rich and fulfilling life.

I've been working for 32 years helping people develop confidence and the capabilities for personal and profession growth, and for fulfilling relationships. I'm a "Relational" psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapist and psychoanalyst but draw from CBT and solution based therapies as well. I work with individuals and couples from all walks of life and from a wide range of professions. In a safe setting I focus on self-development, communication, and emphasize finding your voice. There isn't a single therapy style for everyone. Together, with your input, I try to create a therapeutic approach suited to your individual needs.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
