I also work well with people suffering from anxiety, depression, mood disorders, and substance use issues, as well as relationship, career, and identity issues.
Therapy offers the opportunity to develop ways of responding more authentically and effectively to life’s challenges. I recognize that seeking therapy is in itself a sign of strength and courage, as it can seem easier to try to ignore difficult and repetitive thoughts, emotions, or experiences. I aim to create a warm and supportive space for self-exploration, helping to bring old, unconscious patterns to light and thus begin loosening the hold of self limiting beliefs. In spite of all we cannot control, in learning to relate to our experiences in new ways we can become more grounded and compassionate with ourselves and others.

Accepting new patients (as of May). My practice specializes in working with folx from erotically marginalized communities. Whether you are queer, pursuing ENM/CNM/Polyamory, or have a kink or fetish, you deserve a therapist who understands the importance of these parts of your life, won't pathologize or criticize them and is with you in solidarity and community. I am pleasure-positive, kink-aware, and passionate about working with people who have been or are involved in sex work. My work is informed by an intersectional feminist lens and incorporates principles of body neutrality and health at every size (HAES).

I understand that therapy is not a one-size-fits-all process, as different types of approaches are effective for each person’s needs. Within my work, I strive to create a safe space for clients to feel seen and heard. I take into account the importance of looking at the whole person and the range of aspects that contribute to who you are. Everyone has their own unique journey, and my goal is to assist you with fostering a life rooted in self-empowerment. As you nourish your body, mind, and spirit, you can unlock your capacity to flourish in every area of life.

I like to work relationally, which means that we, together, work on whatever challenges present themselves for you at this time in your life. It is my belief that each of us holds the answers to our own life challenges within ourselves. Therapy can create a supportive framework that can help clear debris from life's path so that one can see the path more clearly. Adult life is often connected to our history, and the culture/environments we grew up in. Therapy can be a place to understand the threads between past and present. I often work with folks who are becoming parents. This phase is complex and can stir the silt of our story.

The therapeutic modality I utilize is IFS therapy. I find this model to be effective for presenting issues, such as depression, anxiety, stress, and trauma. It is a non-pathologizing model, and together, our goal is to heal the parts that hold emotional pain which is the core of IFS therapy.

"Your present circumstances do not determine where you go, they merely determine where you start." Feelings of loss, shame, sadness and anxiety often keep us stuck in unhealthy patterns. I have a general practice focusing on the treatment of depression, anxiety, trauma, substance abuse and impulse control disorders. Using Internal Family Systems (IFS), cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness and other coping strategies I guide clients forward, to health, wellness, safety and acceptance.

I am a clinical psychologist in practice in Amherst since 1989. I work with a wide range of people, from college aged through older adults, and with a wide range of problems and issues including: negative or vulnerable self-image, depression, anxiety, relationship problems, losses, and life transitions. I strive to provide a warm, safe, collaborative, open atmosphere in which to help people find relief from suffering and enhanced vital engagement in living. I believe that pathways to growth and healing often involve increasing awareness of underlying self-defeating patterns in the ways people experience and live their lives.

For over twenty years I have been helping people work through their situations to think more clearly, make better choices, and ultimately, to feel better about themselves. Common problems range from depression and anxiety to substance abuse, anger, physical health problems and dissociation.
The findings of modern neuroscience are coming together with the practices of ancient traditions in the service of people whose lives have been marked by experiences of extreme stress and loss. I identify my practice as part of this international effort to expand our understanding of the human mind, body, spirit and community. My work with clients is based on scientific evidence, guided by traditional wisdom, and dedicated to the art of moving together toward balance, realization and integration in the present moment.

We all have a unique journey in life. I believe that our resilience is as unique as our journey. I work with clients to help them overcome distressing cycles that make them feel stuck and empower them to find stability, create healthier relationships and live an enriched life. Together we explore underlying emotions and find new ways of coping with past traumas, difficult life transitions, loss, relational distress and other mental health issues.

Hi, I’m John. I love to work with couples, and will also work with individuals looking to improve their relationships, especially with the hope (but not the requirement) their partner will join us. Does your relationship with your partner seem like a constant challenge to make it work, to see each other as you once did? I can help you understand what is going on between you, to communicate in a way that gives you each a broader perspective on your relationship so that you can learn to know what each other feels and find a way to work together as a team to make your relationship more fulfilling and less stressful.

My specialty is in working with adults that are wanting to move past talk therapy in order to heal traumas by accessing their inner healing intelligence, and repair pathways for greater resiliency. In turn, this allows one to get to know the Self on a profoundly deep level, and to be working in harmony with the functions of the internal system. The tools are already within. Sometimes, we just need to be shown how to access them. In other words, I will not be giving you a fish, I will be teaching you to fish. I have been working in mental health since 2010, and witnessing the magic of healing and growth is what keeps me going.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist and neurotherapist. I utilize state-of-the-art, neuroscience-based technologies to help facilitate change in my clients. I work with individuals from three to over eighty years of age. Most people contact me as a result of an understandable ambivalence towards taking medications or a desire to reduce the difficulties associated with some mental or physical condition viewed by others as 'unalterable' or life-long (e.g., ADHD, learning disabilities, autism, depression, anxiety, chronic pain, traumatic brain injury, or other medical conditions).

I am currently accepting new clients! The most significant factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic relationship itself. With this in mind, I adopt a warm and collaborative approach with each client. I enjoy working with a wide variety of issues, including treating mood disorders such as depression and anxiety; addressing relationship challenges and life transitions; supporting recovery from substance abuse; exploring issues of racial and cultural identity; and enhancing skills for management of trauma history.

I've supported people from many walks of life struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, oppression, grief/loss, chronic pain, low self-esteem, addictions and other issues.
We all need help and support sometimes. Many of us have been taught that asking for help is a sign of weakness. We may have tried reaching out for help and were ignored, shamed, or hurt by those we trusted, leading us to create protections, to shut down, or to engage in unworkable coping strategies that keep us stuck and hurting. The truth is, asking for help is brave and takes courage and willingness. Sometimes it can feel overwhelming just trying to untangle and make sense of it all. Healing IS possible! And you don't have to do it alone. In fact, healing is best done in connection with others.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
