As it is not just the individual struggling with the problem, I invite the family into treatment as well.
Are you struggling with problems that seem hopeless? Do you feel no one is listening? Is your motivation low? Does fear control your life? It is difficult to be in any of these situations and it may feel hopeless now but with my help we will find solutions. I use a trauma informed approach and provide a safe environment so you may learn to reduce the control fear has on you or improve your ability to communicate in difficult relationships. With all issues, we will work together to discover your strengths and build the skills needed to bring about change.

As a couple and family therapist my approach views family, intimate partner and peer relationships as the foundation of our well-being. Our relationships shape how we view ourselves and influence future relationships. Depression, anxiety and general distress often occur as a result of strained relationships in our lives. I work with individuals, couples and families to identify the important stories which shape our understanding of ourselves and our relationships. Progress is achieved through gaining insights into our vulnerabilities and overcoming our defenses to create a positive environment for relationship intimacy to develop.

Graduate training in marriage and family therapy informs my work with individuals and families.
As all of us seek wellness (safety, comfort, peace, health), and growth (knowledge, spirituality, compassion), we all draw upon various skills, goals, experiences and beliefs that shape our behavior. In my work, I respect clients as individuals who are doing what they can to achieve wellness and growth, and who experience successes to greater or lesser degrees in the different phases and circumstances of their lives. My efforts in counseling focus on what the client wants and how they can identify and apply their own strengths and resources in order to meet their personal goals.

Kindness. Letting Go. Acceptance. Patience. Trust. Peace. If these words resonate with you, you may benefit from an approach like mindfulness based cognitive behavioral therapy. With this approach you can practice being kind and accepting towards yourself, including your thoughts and feelings, while at the same time working towards understanding and changing any unhelpful beliefs, habits, or situations in your life. Modern life, with all its stress and busyness and commotion, seems to combine with our individual challenges, difficulties, and burdens to push our human minds and bodies past the point of health and wellness.

On our path in life we all go through times of struggle. Sometimes from unresolved past issues or just problems in the present. I believe we can learn to know ourselves and move through difficulties when we have support from a trusted individual with whom we can process. I work in collaboration with clients to build on natural strengths, while addressing barriers to progress, so they can move toward their goals. I work from a wholistic perspective (mind/body) and create an emotionally supportive, non-judgmental space where clients can feel safe to share their stories and create insight for action and growth.

" Simply become who you are." My goal is to walk with my clients as they navigate the sometimes confusing process of "becoming." I offer strength based, relationship focused support to young children and the adults who care for them. I work with caregivers to increase awareness and understanding of the unique challenges and gifts these early years bring. I also offer support to adults going through life's transitions - be it beginning a new career, marriage, divorce, starting or ending school, death, unexpected illness or other changes in life that have left you feeling a bit lost for direction.

My work focuses on positive relationships - with yourself and others - based on compassion and fearless self-awareness. Even when we are thinking, feeling or doing things that we don't like, there is something about it all that makes sense. Uncovering the mystery of that logic is important to therapy. This process helps us come home to ourselves and to the present moment. I specialize in individual and couple goal oriented therapy. I also have considerable expertise in parent-child relationships, behavior management and emotional intelligence in children (see more at www.PositiveParentingCT.com).

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
