I welcome you, all of you – the good, the bad, and the ugly. I welcome the part of you that wants to scream and perhaps doesn’t know how to. I welcome the part of you that is screaming and not being heard. I welcome the part of you that constantly criticizes you – whose voice is that? I welcome the many versions of you as a child – carefree? careful? I welcome the parts of you that are shining and the parts of you that are hiding. I welcome the parts of you that feel uncontrollable and the parts of you that you keep in order. I welcome the parts you want to get rid of and the parts you cling onto.

If you are unhappy about your relationships; conflicted in work, studies or vocational choice; or are managing your anxieties through behaviors like binge-eating or substance abuse, then I can help you understand how self-defeating patterns arise, and give you tools to change them. I am experienced in both psychoanalytic and behavioral approaches to treatment and believe in adapting these to fit the individual, in order to create a strong alliance that will build confidence in your ability to change. It is never too late to start making a significant difference in your life, even at an advanced age.

I believe psychotherapy can offer an the opportunity to explore difficult internal experiences, relationships or life transitions in a safe, supportive environment that encourages productive change. That opportunity is based on a collaborative relationship between client and therapist. It is this relationship that is central to the change process. To facillitate the change that clients hope for, a warm, empathic and open therapist is important.

Therapy is a dynamic journey of self-discovery and personal growth toward living an intentional, authentic, and more satisfying life in the face of the inevitable ebbs and flow of life. We will partner together to explore dynamics of the past, develop insight in the present, and access your innate capacities for changing your future.

As a longtime couples therapist, I’m bringing my relational acumen into workplace settings, supporting workplace groups to navigate relational health and communication in employment settings.
I have a passion for working with couples at all stages of the life cycle. Premaritals, empty nesters, LGBT couples, couples with young children seeking to balance parenting with time for self and partner, couples needing support around sexuality and commitment issues, couples at a crossroads.... Much of my early therapeutic training was in Hospice bereavement counseling. Through that experience I became drawn to therapeutic encounters with the potential for spiritual renewal. In recent years I've connected with that initial sense of generativity and meaning through the practice of couples therapy, most notably in work as a premarital counselor.

Discovering who you are and what truly matters is a personal journey we often navigate alone. Yet, embarking on this exploration together with a dedicated therapist can illuminate new perspectives and foster growth. I approach this process with an appreciation for the ways in which you’ve navigated life so far and understanding that not everything needs to be abandoned, after all, you’re here! Instead, we look at how we can evolve to set you up for the best version of yourself and your life right now. Between the two of us, I believe we can accomplish the change you want!

Teaching you how to rise and flow on the journey of parenthood is my passion. I help you learn tools to support yourself so that parenting feels connected and joyful. My own entry into motherhood was a journey in itself—miscarriage, medical complications and postpartum anxiety. It was this experience that inspired me to work with others on their journey of parenthood. I'll work with you to manage challenges, build greater awareness of thoughts and feelings and improve balance in your life. I love to take an individualized approach to therapy based on your needs, and I see myself as a guide along a journey where you are the expert.

When you look for a therapist, you want someone you trust. Trust is the most important aspect of a good client/therapist match. It's a good idea to come in for a few sessions and get a feeling for the therapist, and I welcome you to do so. After you feel comfortable, you can start identifying the blocks that prevent you from living the best life you can live. I've helped people with depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, histories of abuse, grief and loss, and people who've been hospitalized to break through their feelings of shame.

There are times in our lives when we come to feel uncomfortable in our own skin, maybe anxious or depressed, easily tired, or angry. These "symptoms" are there to tell us something isn't working right with us; they beckon us to turn inward, take heed of that small voice that unbidden calls to us. A voice that may have been there for years. It may whisper something like:" you could do better, be better, love better, accomplish more; hurt less." It challenges us to discover what keeps us from being thoroughly engaged in our lives, involved in our work, or deeply connected to our friends, our lovers, ourselves...

Sex is usually a topic that is met with secrecy, embarrassment, shame, or judgment. Thus, I aim to create a safe, open environment to address various relational and sexual concerns (i.e., lack of intimacy, infidelity, erectile dysfunction, "excessive masturbation") with individuals of various sexual orientations, genders, ethnicities, and kinks. You should be able to have the sex you desire! I also welcome individuals who have issues related to depression, anxiety, trauma, stress, self-esteem, life transitions, employment, communication, assertiveness, and/or family dynamics.

Relationships that make us feel safe, understood and validated are necessary for growth. When we can trust that someone won’t judge us, we’re able to explore all parts of ourselves with them. Together with my clients, we create the safety in our relationship that encourages creativity, curiosity, and healing. With a foundation of trust, we can work on tuning into your needs and giving you the tools to get those needs met. Too often, we receive messages that tell us our experiences and boundaries are not valid. I look forward to challenging these messages together!

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
